Well, amerifriends think a pizza must be really fat and greasy.

I think pizzas like that are fairly hard to find in the US. Most regions have their own style of pizza as well and not a lot of people really want to try something different if they've eaten it a certain way from when they were a child.

I though that pizza was invented in New York by Italian immigrants and then Italians back in Italy altered it to be more in line with Italian cuisine. Is that wrong?

Again, I think it's because their pizza is so monstrously huge. I prefer ours, of course (though I'm not sure if this is because of bias or taste), but American pizza isn't bad.
I've had some really good pizza in the US as well as really bad. The worst is Philadelphia-style pizza: thick, chewy crust brushed with oil, topped with American cheese singles, pickled spicy yellow peppers and fresh tomato slices then sprinkled with "Italian seasoning," whatever that is. Just awful: pic related.

>> No.4250690

>>4250686
"Italian seasoning" is a blend of dried basil, oregano, and parsley. It's nothing horrible, just a cheap way to dash on some flavor for people who don't keep a sedimentary spice rack.

That pizza looks really weird.

Common misconception amongst Americans.
Hey, the Chinese believe pizza was invented in Shanghai and brought back to Italy by Marco Polo.
The oldest references to a flat bread topped with meat and cheese, however, comes from the area of Tripoli where it was called 'pidze.'
It spread eastward, making its way to Greece and finally Magna Grecia, Naples being the seat of that region.
While the other areas nearly forgot about the dish, Naples kept it as a common street food and evolved it into many different varieties. The first modern-style tomato, mozzarella and basil pizza was made by Raffaele Esposito for Margherita of Savoy, using the tricolours of the newly formed Italian union. She reigned from 1880 to 1900, I believe, so it must have been created during that time.
Nonetheless, it's entirely possible some Neapolitans brought pizza to Philadelphia and/or New York and made different versions there, but the first tomato, mozzarella and basil pizza, and therefore mother of most modern pizzas, was a Neapolitan creation.

We don't use thyme all that much. At least not in my region. Marjoram is used almost exclusively in chicken soup. Regardless, those herbs would not be combined in any native Italian dish. I can understand other people mixing them together as an appropriation of foreign flavours, similar to the concept of curry powder, but it's not something we do.
