Ok, /ck/. I've never cared for beer much, but that's only because all I've ever been offered was camel piss & water (read: Bud Light). Suggest a beer for someone who'd like to start drinking beer (and not just to get wasted.)

Hard mode: Suggest a wine under the same conditions.

Drink some stouts nigga.

Any chocolate stout. Even Guiness is ok to begin with. I used to be a straight up lager faggot. While I still enjoy lagers, Ive opened my tastes to many kinds of new beer. Stouts have currently been my absolute favorites.

I'd agree with this. Pretty much the "gateway drug" to craft beer. Try the Boston Lager/Boston Ale.

This is the beer that really got me into beer. Has a nice tangy and sweet finish so not too bitter like other beers.

Also, you can pretty much find it anywhere and it ain't too pricey.

Another vote for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

For wine, look for a Pinot Noir, don't really know any US wineries.

not OP, but in a similar situation.

in general, most pale lagers I've tried have a slightly pisswater aftertaste for me, even the ones that aren't Bud Light. could anyone recommend a flavorful stout beer? I like that tangy, bitter taste of what I assume is hops.

I used to think I hated beer until I got sent out-of-town for work and was rooming with half a dozen construction laborers. All they drank was Miller High Life and R&R.

Also, my first beer being Newcastle probably didn't help any.

The second option is probably best. That's what I did.
I went from Pabst to Arrogant Bastard. I fucking hated it at first, then I tried some belgian's, asked the liquor store clerk, and now I spend too much money on beer.
I do still enjoy a High Life though.

Just get a wide array of local microbrewed beers made my people who love beer. There is an ocean of varieties and tastes.

Life's too short for sixpacks of bullshit lagers and pilsners.

why not try ciders? hunters, redds, savanahs; or lemon hunter are pretty good. im not a fan of beer either; otherwise wat works for me is coconut liquer; mix it with pretty much any fruit juice and i'll probably taste pretty good.

Try Fat Tire and 1554, those are really good. A lot of people here are recommending Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and I agree because it's the best Pale Ale I've ever had, although there better beer out there. Sam Adams is good too, they have a lot of variety packs. OP try to stick to smaller breweries, they tend to be less watered down and more beer tasting.

Bingo. Craft beers and micro-breweries are the only way to go. The people in charge can, and generally tend to be pretty adventurous in their brewing methods and recipes, which ends in some really crazy and really good beer.

Not just crazy and good but not fucking watered down and tasting like piss. Also I would rather drink a beer made by someone that loves to make beer instead of someone just there for their 9-5. That's why I choose craft beers everytime, fuck I even homebrew instead of buying shit from major breweries. The quality levels are on a different level totally.

Do you like sweet things? Coffee? What do you like?

Look you really aught to try Sam Addams or Karl Straus in a flavor that appeals to you then branch out based on that. If you like coffee try a cream stout, if you are a person with a sweet tooth try the Cherry Wheat.

A good starter wine is White Zinfandel it's light has very little smack you in the face notes, and plays nice (does not necessarily pair extremely well, but it doesn't clash) with lots of food. After dinner try a Muscato or a Muscato D' Asti or Rosa Regal, or a really supper jammy Syrah (I really like one called "The Textbook", but I can't find it anymore *sad*).

Sam Adams is a good popular brand that will be a good exploratory step up from swill beer. Actually, fucking anything is a step up. NORMAL bud is a step up. Buy some bud in bottles, work your way up to good beer or you'll just hate that it doesn't taste like the filth you're used to always drinking.

There are a handful of good breweries in Indiana (I'm from Bloomington). Three Floyds (from Meunster, IN) is the most known, and rightfully so. They make amazing beer, and are literally world renowned. From Indianapolis, look into Flat 12 and Sun King. In Bloomington we have Upland and The Bloomington Brewing Company.

If you like coffee, look into stouts. Oatmeal, Chocolate, and Coffee stouts are all available this time of year and will probably appeal to your tastes.

I was at Ebenezer's Pub in Maine, an acclaimed mecca of Belgian beer, during their Belgian beer fest. They had half a dozen lambics from various years on tap in addition to a slew of other good-ass obscure shit. Some old-ass fuck, smacking his lips like a cow, was at the next table eschewing the virtues of his bottle of Stella

Never has my inner beer-faggot/nerd flared up so

Drank a lot of really good beer though, and had some good carbonnade flamande

Pilsner Urquell is pretty much the best beer in the world. Invented by a bavarian, brewed in the Czech Republic. Beer doesn't get any better than that.

They're actually pulling out of Chicago a bit so they can distribute more to Indiana. I buy beer for a small store in central IN and we got a case of it the other day. Surprised us all and didn't make it to the floor before all the employees ravished it. I really wish they could keep up with the demand for Gumballhead and ZD.

Lately I've been drinking Sam Adams Spring and Winter seasonals. Both very good, hard to find any fault with them. Definitely recommend.

Recently tried Brooklyn Brewery's Pilsner, surprisingly good. You might find it a little bitter but it has a nice citrus aftertaste.

Would also reccommend Magic Hat #9, great entry beer. Similar to Blue Moon with the orangey goodness but its even better. Maybe a dollar more in stores.
