Hey /ck/, usually don't come here, but need some advice. I want to get a knife set for my mother's Christmas gift. Sadly I don't know any good cooking knife sets. I've looked on amazon and everything just looks bad.

Tl;dr need good knife set for under 150$ that includes a block to hold them.

Thanks in advance.

Bed, Bath and Beyond has some pretty good sets.

Williams-Sonoma has pretty much the exact same knives with a 200% markup. Seriously, unless you're a hippie with disposable income, avoid WS like the plague.

is good advice. Bed Bath and Beyond has some good stuff for fair prices. Just go see what they have.

I have a set of J.A. Henckels knives. They're pretty good quality. German made.

german, german, german. Jap knives are good too but some people get all antsy in their pantsy about the handles certain brands use.

dude, get her a chefs/cooks knife and a utility knife. Santokus are good for veg. A whole knife set probably a waste of money, spend the same money on 2/3 good knives! Most jobs can be done easily with a cooks knife!

She specifically wants a new set to replace her old, aging one she's had for 20 years or so.

if she has good knives just sharpen them all for her. It's not that hard to do once you get used to it. Extremely time consumeing yes but not difficult. (I know how dull old people get their knives) Or send them to get professionally sharpened and have new handles made.

>cooking knife sets

you generally don't cook knives, they are not edible.

>> No.4068806

Woah...
It's an insult to buy someone you know a knife as a present in my country.

I presume it's acceptable elsewhere?
The more you know...

Same in my country. In that case you just "sell" it to the person for like 1 cent.

and that "one cent" changes what, exactly? do you also march clockwise three times around fresh chicken entrails?

Dude I got no idea. It's one of those customs whose purpose has long been forgotten but people still value them.
