This is a sign of the end. These things are going for $25 a box on ebay, with the price rising by the hour as more people realize that the things are already gone from supermarkets. What is next, Girl Scout cookies?

What are you doing to prepare for the end of the world?

This seriously is making me upset. Not upset because I'll miss all those Twinkies and Hostess cakes, I'm upset because everyone is losing their shit over them not making them anymore. C'mon guys, I argue all the time that not that many Americans eat shitty fat foods and that we actually have some great food culture here and then this happens. All the fatbrains come up out of the woodworks and start crying and bitching, you'd think they were going to quit selling something like alcohol or coffee in the US. Guys, its a terrible quality overly processed sugar and preservative laden mass produced pre-packaged lump of crap that has no redeeming qualities.

Calm the fuck down. If you are really that upset about not getting your twinkies then you probably shouldn't be eating them anyway. You guys get upset when everyone calls us Amerifats but just take a step back and look at yourselves right now. Maybe we really are a nation of fat whining fucking children.

Yes, I'm mad. I know somebody was about to point out that "I mad".

The only thing those half dozen companies make are snack cakes, chips, candy and crackers. If you are actually buying that shit when you go to the grocery store then you deserve nothing better. What about the produce? The meats? The cheeses? The freshly baked breads? The seafood? The grains and nuts and legumes you can buy in bulk? Dairy? Coffee and beer? In this case i think it is a near certainty that someone will buy up the Twinke brand and continue producing them. Many hostess products are made at contract bakeries anyway. >The Twinkies brand is marketable and will continue.

Maybe, but not if Little Debbie buys it specifically for the purpose of keeping it from doing so.

Or they could simply keep selling their "Cloud Cakes" and call them "Twinkies". People who actually preferred Twinkies to Cloud Cakes would be fucked. People aren't panicking because there may not be an item CALLED "Twinkies" in the future. LOL It's the actual product that they are concerned about.

the highest bidder...

When a company goes into liquidation, the administrators and accountants go through everything - down to pencils in the store cupboard - and value everything. They then open channels to sell them to interested parties. So machinery will go to a new factory in China or Brazil, computers will be aquired by a charity or benevelent organization that provides PCs to poor children, and marketable brands get sold to food conglomerates.

Also as a previous poster stated, an entire operating wing of the company can be bought without being broken up. So the same factories could still create the same products, just under a new umbrella company like Coke etc.

What everyone's missing blaming the union or the management is that the company was a sinking ship for a long time. Workers made repeated concessions; most of Hostess' competitors are union too!

Hostess workers were advised by their union that if they went on strike, it would likely end the company. A vast majority of workers - over 90% - voted to strike with the full knowledge of that. They withheld their labor, as is their right, and the company folded. Now the recipes, factories, trademarks, and so on will be bought up and divided among Hostess' (profitable, also unionized) competitors like Bimbo and Enteman's, who can use the resources more efficiently.

Yes, the strike was the straw that broke the camel's back, but Hostess was going to go under. At best, if worker's had taken a fourth year of pay cuts and stayed on the job, the company might have been broken up more slowly. Companies fail every day for a variety of reasons, that is the natural progress of the market.

>> No.4009769

>>4009717
Not really mismanaged finances. In the first bankruptcy, they were saddled with an unmanageable amount of debt by Hedge funds that were supposed to be "bailing them out". Instead they came in, restructured shit, sold off shit for a profit and walked away from the company leaving it with cash, but with so much future debt that they were going to crash again.

Hedge funds do this sort of thing all the time. Hell some Hedge funds will gather enough to take controlling interest in a perfectly working company, and then piece the company off for big cash, and then sell the remainder of the company off, to have the company collapse after they are gone. They dont care, they made their millions, and fuck the workers, right?

>> No.4009776

>>4009717
Stratified bureaucracies, whether in corporate management or union management, are equally bourgeois, and can never represent the worker.

The REAL point of mass worker organization is nothing less than to democratize the work place. The modern union is the recuperation of worker organization into the productive process, and THAT is why unions are dying.

Also, as pointed out above, the bankruptcy restructuring left Hostess with liquid cash but even more debt.

Also, workers repeatedly made concessions. a 30% pay cut one year, a 20% pay cut another year, and more. Workers cooperated with whatever terms the company proposed for years and were willing to work for less pay. These repeated concessions did not prevent the company from going under. If the management couldn't find a solution with full cooperation from the unions, obviously there were serious structural problems with the company that didn't have an easy fix.

And, as I pointed out: Over 90% voted to strike *with full knowledge* that it would likely end the company. Union workers were told by their leadership that the company could quite possibly liquidate in the face of a strike. This wasn't just "the union calling a bluff" - the workers were well aware of the consequences of their decision. Should they have been obligated to play ball when the company was going under anyway? They struck because they knew they had nothing to lose.

The official twinkie recipe, that I can still remember to this day.

Step 1.) Secure an 80,000 lb. truck load of liquid eggs, conveniently created by the plant in the next town.

Step 2.) Suck said 80,000 pounds of liquid eggs up into a holding tank, in prep for running through the
pasteurizer.

Step 3.) Run the pasteurized eggs to the top of a four-story-tall 40' diameter stainless-steel egg-drier,
with a fucking huge gas-fired blower at the bottom that blasts hot air up the cylinder toward the
shower-heads at the top that sprayed liquid eggs.

Step 4.) Run the powdered eggs into a huge vibrating machine filled with plastic rings that break up any
large chunks, and then run the output from that into the mixer.

Step 5.) Add 15,000 pounds of sugar. Mix well.

Step 6.) Add 1500 pounds of 'magic twinkie mix', which is what we called it. It was a nameless,
ingredient-less bag of 'stuff' that would make this into twinkies. No one there knew what it was, but
it was white, powdery, and smelled pretty bad.

Step 7.) Run the final mixture into another machine that blended the powder for a while, as the water
and some vegetable oil were intermittently added to the mixture.

Step 8.) Mixture gets dumped into molding pans and then goes through a conveyor-feed oven the size of
most single-family homes.

Step 9.) Baked twinkies are injected with 'cream filling', which was actually just crisco mixed with
sugar and titanium dioxide (paint whitener)

Step 10.) Machine removes them from their pans, bags them, and boxes them while one semi-retarded
(seriously, he was a mongoloid) watches to make sure shit works OK.

Done.

I know this sounds ridiculous to Europeans, especially since America is having a obesity crisis, but Twinkies have existed for 80 goddamn years. The old black and white adds with the cowboy? Pure Americana. It's like Coke, especially the kind that comes in glass bottles. Or root 66. These are all things that no longer exist. The good comparison was marmite. I've had marmite. It's fucking disgusting. But It's important to English culture, as is HP sauce and pub food like toad in the hole.

I would venture to guess because last year the national weather service issued frantic warnings about how Irene was going to fuck our shit up and it would be worse than Katrina, so everyone got ready, and all we got was about 6 hours of rain.
