OP, I know that this offends your sensibilities regarding cooking a fine steak, but you need to realize that this guy's failings are a blessing in disguise. This is the perfect opportunity to grab that nasty-ass old leftover steak that's been sitting around in the fridge or freezer for way too long. Freezer burn? Slimy crud on there? Weird colors? Just cook that steak well done for your friend. He won't be able to tell what kind of meat it was due to being cooked to hell and back, he'll be happy with his well-done steak, and you get the chance to get rid of an unwanted piece of crap.

No, I actually like my steaks rare, even bleu if I'm feeling randy, but the idea that a well done steak can't be flavorful is a myth.
