So I just heard about this: Fairy Bread. It's white bread with butter and... sprinkles.

This isn't for real, is it? Please tell me this is a joke.

The salt intensifies the taste of the hundreds & thousands and helps the hundreds & thousands stick to the bread and melt the outer coating (which are not sprinkles, by the way, they are tiny sugar granules coated in fondant). Same principle behind salted caramel.

Almost related: In Minnesota and other areas with a large scandinavian population a lot of people buy lefse around this time of year, which are kind of like "potato tortillas". You usually roll them up with butter, cinnamon, and sugar. It sounds awful but it's actually de best. It's a standard around Thanksgiving and Christmas and it's usually the first food item people run out of because it's so fuckin' tasty.

I don't know how it works in the US, but in Australia and New Zealand our sprinkles are sugar-free; they're made from coloured starch. This gives proper fairy bread a weird but quite nice flavour. If US sprinkles contain sugar it would basically be the most unhealthy thing ever.

I swiped 2 of those boxes last time I was there, brought them home, and my idiot wife ate them both with the same enthusiasm and regalia as eating a stale hershey's kiss found under the sofa cushion while cleaning. Meaning: she just dumped the whole box in her mouth and then complained "it tastes off".

So why the fuck did you eat the second box and not save me a taste?

"I dunno...."

It looked alright. Reminds me of silly shit like grilled cheeze whiz sammiches I ate as a kid and now eat maybe once a year. If you don't develop a proper bias as a kid, it will never be as enjoyable as an adult.

> Also enjoyed the meat and cheese breakfast.

Hell ya, changed my thinking about sammiches much for the better. Before that I always went for the "lunchmeat steak" effect. Pile the meat on so thick that its like nomming on a steak. Then of course you have to exaggerate every other ingredient to maintain the proper ratios.

After trying that sammich style I realized: (fyi its very high quality meat/cheese/bread, the meat is sliced ultra thin, cheese a little thicker, bread is matched in selection and thickness to the cheese, then dutch mayo, which is the opposite of heavy mayo, its closer to a mayo soup than the regular mayo served in n.america. It brings much needed moisture more than anything)

1. For the same or less $ you can have a lighter, tastier, non-bloating, and all around higher quality sammich

2. The 3 ingredients (disregard the mayo, it is designed to take a back seat and keep its mouth shut) are the parts of a sammich that can truely be gourmet. They taste best when they are delivered in a controlled, polite sammich. I would compare it to taste testing wine. You will get a better picture of things by swishing a small sip than you will drinking a liter of jug wine via funnel and frat chant.
