Depends on what you expect. If you want "eclectic," the town of Manitou Springs is just next door and they have actual dirty hippies that form drum circles in public parks. If you're coming here for school (UCCS or Colorado College), you'd probably be pretty happy here.

Honestly, Colorado Springs has reputation for being ridiculously conservative and Christian, but you can live here and never notice, especially if you're going to school and spend time on the UCCS or CC campuses. These days there are more MMJ dispensaries than churches.

Pro's Ranch Market (super Mexican market) is where I do most of my unbranded shopping. I can get pasta that serves four for $0.25, 24 handmade tortillas for $2.50, and fresh produce at good prices. Sometimes they'll have 10 pounds of potatoes for $1.00.

Walmart for all my branded food and bananas. Those bananas are damn delicious.

I live within walking distance of three provincial grocery stores (Provigo, IGA, Metro) and several other independent stores (Intermarché Quatre Frères, Marché Lobo, Marché Eden) and even several others I've not been to (Hispanic grocery, Kosher grocery, another fruit market).

Not to mention that I live a RPG shot away from Chinatown where I can find more cheap produce.

There's also Pharmaprix that's a lot like a general store here, they often have nice specials.

I can't say I go to one store anymore. They all have their peaks and downfalls but still, overall, I think IGA takes the lead for their good balance of fair prices on all product lines (produce/dairy and meat/non-perishable).

Commissary pricing is strange though. For those that don't know, it's set by military regulation and they have no obligation to make a profit. So for instance, they can't mark things up beyond a certain amount that they paid for it. Bulk items end up being cheaper than buying single items sometimes. Cereal in particular is ridicucheap. At least 50% off what I find in Ralph's.

I buy my dry goods and canned stuff and whatnot at an HEB or Kroger, I'll get meats and produce there if it is on sale. I buy most of my meat and produce from a small mexican grocer deeeeep in the barrio. For whatever reason the meat and produce is cheap there. Skirt steak is like $5 a pound, avocados are 4 for $1, you can get 15 limes for $1 and stuff. It's about a 15 min drive but well worth it if I'm loading up on meat and veggies.
