2) It's not a USA thing. We have gyros (Greeks) or schwarma (lebanon/isreal), not a lot of Turkish people here.

Personally, I prefer the nonmuslim versions. Blended lamb, pork, beef, or chicken. The sauces are always fresher and better too with real dairy. This is more a delight than peasant food that doesn't require refrigeration. Sour cream or greek yogurt based sauces are just better.

It's very important. That distinguishes the Döner kebab from the standard kebab...otherwise known as shish kebab, or simply meats and veggies grilled on a skewer. Pic related. It's not the same thing as Döner, which is why you use that word to distinguish the two.

I'm American and ate this stuff when I was in Germany last year. There are about 4 döner kebab places for 1 of everything else. Which is ok, because it is awesome.

I've also eaten at all sorts of gyro places in the US as well as various Middle Eastern places in the US. There is literally nothing here that compares to the döner kebab places in Germany.

Imagine the cheapest, nastiest corned beef you can, with little bits of tooth and bone in there like they just threw the whole animal in a giant grinder and then spat in there for good measure. Now imagine it's made with lamb instead of beef.

That's what all the "donner meat" I've ever tried was like. The only people who eat it in my town are chavs after a binge drinking session in the stickiest nightclubs they could find in the town centre.

They usually just go for "donner meat and chips with chili sauce," or even just "a tray of donner meat," because bread and salad is for skinny little women and geeks.
