50 cheeseburgers from McDonalds on Monday. See how many I can eat and if I can't just throw away the rest. Every week I'd slowly improve until I could eat 50 cheeseburgers in one sitting.

Because you see, I'd not just use the money to eat but to improve myself.

Hey, I have about the same budget for food per week but I have to feed two adults and a baby (who eats more than you would think). I get a big bag (64 oz) of Birdseye frozen vegetables from wal-mart for $6, I get a big bag of frozen chicken breasts, a large container of ground turkey (I divide it into portions and freeze the rest), a package of pork tenderloin (sometimes comes with two loins), a bag of onions, a family sized box of brown rice (I cheat and use boil-in-bag), a large container of fat free greek yogurt (used as is,as sour cream,to make tzaziki) , cucumber, bag of lemons,eggs, milk, cheese, sandwich thins and a couple of heads of lettuce that I wash, dry, and use for salads,add to sandwiches, or use as wraps for turkey taco lettuce wraps,italian dressing that I use as marinade for the chicken, bbq sauce,lite soy sauce, honey, and tea bags for iced tea. I typically keep a well stocked pantry so I can make dressings, baked goods, or emergency meals (tuna salad, beans, spaghetti and sauce) I pick up pantry items little by little.

That can last me a couple of weeks if I am smart about it.

Eggs ($3)

Spend the rest of your money on fruits or veggies and prepare to eat like a king all week. Make roasted chicken and new potatoes. Fry some chicken and eat it with rice or mashed potatoes. Eat an egg over some rice. Make some kind of stew thing with some bacon, beef, beans onions, garlic and spices. Go beans and rice. Damn bro, 50 dollars is looking good.

>> No.3691939

making your own pasta is dirt cheep even if you want to use durum wheat semolina. you don´t even need to use eggs if you want to save more money, just flour, water, salt and some olive oil suffice. you can prolly make a weeks worth for... idk 4 or 5 $? eurofag btw.
which would leave you with like 45 bucks for stuff to eat your pasta WITH. veggies are cheap too so you would prolly have 20, 25 bucks left to buy meat or fish.
so all in all, this doesn´t sound as bad anymore, does it?

I'd do something similar. Your list is pretty much what I eat, actually, almost to a tee. I live in Philadelphia. Here are the prices I can find for similar items:

10 pound bag of chicken leg quarters ($6)
Rice, 50lbs sticky/glutinous ($40, we eat about ⅔lb each portion, so between the two of us, that'd last us 75 days if we eat rice at one meal, daily or $4 per week)
Potatoes, 3 lbs ($2)
Eggs, 2 dozen jumbo ($3)
Greens, if they look good, ($10)
Bacon, 2lbs ($5)
Onions, 6lbs ($2-3)
Garlic, 2lbs ($2)
Beans, 2lbs ($2)
Bread, 24oz/1½lb loaf ($2)
Ground pork, 2lbs, ($2)
Milk, 1 gallon whole ($4)
Cereal, 2 boxes name brand ($5)

Total: $50 exactly, maybe a little more if the milk, which varies week to week from as low as $3,75 to as high as $4,25, if the prices are up that week.

Seriously, they sell bags of them at Wal-Mart for $5.88 here. Just make sure you separate them into portions before freezing, otherwise you end up with a gigantic block of frozen poultry that you'll have no hope in eating unless you cook it all and refreeze.

There are various markets in the Philly area that sell them that cheap. The nearest to me is in Southwest Philadelphia, about 4 miles away. It just opened recently.
There are others in other areas, too. The places are usually Arab or Indian owned, almost exclusively Muslim, either way.
There is an Indian Hindu owned market just outside of Northeast Philadelphia, about 24 miles away. Their prices are ridiculously low, sure, but that distance means you make up for it in gas costs.
I once organised a van ride up there for myself and friends in my neighbourhood. We split the gas costs amongst us so it came to about a buck each for the six of us.
They sell whole (unsplit), bone-in, skin-on chicken breast: 20lb boxes, frozen, for $15.

Hello. I am a student.

$50 = £32

Oats = 50p
Chickpeas = 95p
Pasta = 70p
2 x Tinned tomatoes = £1.40
1kg bananas = £1
1 kg apples = £1.25
Broccoli = £1
6 x Corgettes = £2
1kg onions = £1
Garlic = 70p
2 liters milk = £1
Dozen eggs = £1
Greek yoghurt = 50p
Cottage cheese = 50p
1kg carrots = £1
Raisins = 90p
Harissa = £2
Lemon = 30p
Frozen peas = 95p
Rice = 90p
Soy sauce = £1

Total: £20.55 = $32.03

Oatmeal for breakfast, with raisins/ fruit/ carrots (it actually tastes amazing) OR yoghurt with fruit and oats sprinkled on top. You cook once a day- enough for dinner that night and leftovers for lunch the following day.

Monday I'd make a courgette tagine using the courgettes (duh), some of the chickpeas, a can of the tinned tomatoes, raisins and some harissa. You'll need some of the garlic and onion too, obvs.

Tuesday is falafel using an egg, some more chickpeas and harissa, plus whatever spices you have to spare. Serve with a dip of yoghurt and hot sauce.

Wednesday is pasta with stir fried broccoli and garlic, served with fresh lemon juice, evoo, salt and pepper.

Thursday is a bean stew with chickpeas, peas, onions, garlic, tinned tomatoes, pasta, courgettes and milk.

Friday is egg fried rice, using onions, garlic, carrots, peas and of course 2 eggs and some rice.

Saturday is zucchini loaf using onions, garlic, yoghurt, courgettes and chickpeas.

Sunday you could make broccoli soup/ carrot soup. Or roast some carrots, onions and garlic and serve with rice. Or just go buy something from the shops since you're obviously incapable. £32 is plenty of money.... Then again, the only reason I know how to cook this cheaply is to save as much money for booze as possible.

Pic related: The sort of shit I make on £20 a week. Well... excluding the tabbouleh. That was an extravagance :-)

You mean "zucchini".

Also guessing that everyone's favorite sriracha may be able to fill in if harissa is not available.

No, I meant COURGETTES. If you're going to be so finicky, at least spell it correctly. Also note, that I used the American "Zucchini" in my post (as in, "Zucchini loaf") as well.

Anyhoo, now that we've got that unpleasantness out of the way... I guess siracha could work. Any hot sauce will do if you're living on that sort of budget, I just have a penchant for harissa. Siracha is better for asian food- harissa works well for north african/ middle eastern.

/spoiler/ also I think siracha is vastly overrated /spoiler/

I never really plan I just throw shit together randomly.

I do enjoy making a sort of pie though from cooked cabbage leaves, mashed potatoes, peas, and kielbasa. I layer the cabbage in a oven safe tray, spoon in hot mashed potatoes, top with sliced kielbasa, and pour a sauce of blended peas and water or broth together on top. Mmmmm... doesn't really hold together when hot for slicing but is great if a bit wet sometimes for cutting after it has been refrigerated.

I also make my own pizza crusts and bake them so they are ready in the freezer.

That's just one cup of flour, a pinch of salt, and a packet of quick rise yeast in a mixer. Mix 2tbsp honey and a glass of hot water together. Add water/honey mixture (at about 115degrees) to the flour mixture, blend, then add like 1 3/4 more cups flour until it no longer clings so persistently to your fingersso if you poke. Makes four crusts. Quarter them, roll it out no thicker than a quarter inch, stab a billion times with a fork, brush with olive oil, and pop in thefreezer 425 degree oven for five mins.
