No, bourbon needs corn. 51% (or more).

The legal requirements to qualify as bourbon are:
>Produced in the U.S.
>Made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn
>Aged in new, charred oak containers
>Distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof
>Entered into the container for aging at no more than 125 proof
>Bottled (like other whiskeys) at 80 proof or more
The minimum age for bourbon is 3 months, but anything under 4 years must be labeled with its age. Except "Straight bourbon" which is legally required to age for 2 years at a minimum, cannot be colored/flavored, and can't be blended with another spirit. Another category is Bottled in Bond, which has its own legal requirements
>Bottled-in-bond bourbon is a sub-category of straight bourbon that must be produced by a single distiller at a single distillery in a single season, aged at least four years, and bottled at 100 proof

So legally, rye isn't required at all and is simply one of several cereal grain options. Though admittedly rye is incredibly popular for bourbon mash bills, it's hardly "needed".

> To be legally sold as bourbon, the whiskey's mash bill requires a minimum of 51% corn, with the remainder being any cereal grain. A proposed change to U.S. regulations will expand allowable "grains" to include seeds of the pseudocereals amaranth, buckwheat, and quinoa.

>> No.20624612

>It's sought after because it's the pinnacle
this isn't how it works btw
pappy is all cargo cult at this point, it's popular because it's popular. It hasn't been stitzel-weller distillate since 2014, all you're drinking is old buffalo trace whiskey these days
If you want allocated whiskey that actually delivers, get a bottle of four roses limited edition or one of the named willet family estate single barrels

>or one of the named willet family estate single barrels
already have an 8 year old purple top in hand, and I still find that pappy is fantastic.

I wouldn't pay 2nd hand pricing for Willett or Pappy though.

they're not at all similar so that's not really a good comparison, you just have a preference, that's fine.

Russell's 10 is really good for the price even though it's lower proof... wouldn't pay more than $45 for it (northeast US pricing) but it beats the fuck out of pre-hype Eagle Rare for a 90 proof 10 yr age statement

i've had it. good but immensely overrated by brandwhores.

I've really been enjoying this stuff, more of a rye person overall but this stuff is just great for so many mixed drinks.

Well whatever the case, speaking as an australian, even the cheapest shit has shot up in price in the last several years, so everything is expensive. It's always easier to stick with what we're familiar with rather than trying everything in our price range. Still, I do think it tastes better than plenty of other spirits I've had to far.

basically anything with 2nd hand pricing at 3-5x MSRP is overrated.

Seems like my local liquor store carries basically their entire collection, and even some they don't have listed on their website.
