Sometimes it is worth temporally disabling addblock to see if a shop has a newsletter deal. A lot of shops (not just tea related) have X% off your first purchase offers if you sign up too their newsletter. Use a spare email of course. The more you save the more tea you can buy!
A few other /tea/ deals I know of:
https://verdanttea.com/five-teas-for-5 They also used to have a code for half off your first month of tea club but I think they stopped it.
https://yunomi.life/pages/the-yunomi-newsletter says " ¥1000 coupon off your first order of ¥3000" but it used to just give you free sample pack.
https://cspuerh.com/ has $20 off referral code deals.
https://kingteamall.com/ has 10% off referral code deals.
https://www.liquidproust.com/ does a $5+S&H puerh beginners sample pack every november.
Besides the 5 free samples https://www.teavivre.com/ gives out free rewards points on holiday sales with no purchase necessary that you can bank for later.

Anyone know of any other deals?

Glad it helped. Generally with tea if you want it more flavorful but not more bitter use more tea leaf and not longer steep times. Tea leaf to water ratios and steep time both seem to affect the taste of tea differently. It is not as quite as simple as more/longer is stronger. Water temperature and mineral content can both modify the taste profile as well but I mostly don't mess with those variables besides using cooler water for green teas and avoiding hard water.

My 2023 average monthly spending on tea was $315.31. (Although this includes a few yixing pots and I don't plan to buy more unless I happen to see one I really like).
I still have money for bills, food, and my retirement fund, and usually some to put into savings.
I like tea and get a lot of enjoyment out of it, I think it's worth it.
Physically healthy? I don't think it's a problem but idk. Definitely healthier than soda or alcohol.

The link works, i tested it in Firefox and Chrome on desktop. You may need to temporarily disable your ad blocker or "enhanced tracking protection" so the pop up shows. On firefox click the little shield icon in the url and it has a toggle to turn "enhanced tracking protection" off, I had to do that to make it show up. They use "Smile" to handle their rewards and referrals so it probably has to load 3rd party assets to work. You can turn it back on when you are done. Or you can just use a different browser. For a long while "enhanced tracking protection" broke the reviews on yunnansourcing as well.

Here are the tasting notes I promised. I’m not the best at this so bear with me. This is a cheap Dancong I think I got off ebay. If my memory serves it was sold as an Magnolia Aroma dancong. Also of note the tea was not made the year that I bough it and now is at least 6 years old. I lost the original bag so I cant give the exact date. I am not sure how aging is expected to affect dancongs. Besides being cheap the age was my other reason for interest in this tea.

The leaves look like a fairly typical dancong, long darkly colored strips, looks moderately roasted. It has a few more stem bits and ugly leaves than a premium dancong but it does not look as rough a maocha either. I am very bad with scents but the dry leaves have a clear fruit nectar and flowers aroma too it. I think I can still smell a hint of the roast as well.

The color of the tea is a dark pale orange with a slight (purple?) tint. Upfront taste is perfumy with hints of peach or lychee juice followed by punchy bitter notes and something like browned toast. As stated before, it has a puckering, “juicy” mouthfeel to it. I say that in the pleasant sense. It the sort of thing that makes you want to take another sip and swish the tea around your mouth to get the full sensation. The tea’s finish is drying and moderately astringent with lingering florals on the back of the throat. Again, it makes you want to drink more to rewet ones mouth.

I used fast flash steeps because this tea will get overly bitter if you steep it too long. It is not the sort of tea I would recommend drinking a lot of on an empty stomach but it does not bother me if I have had a meal in the last couple hours. The later brews seem to have the bitterness creep up and the other flavors fade but I am not really disappointed considering the price I paid (<10¢/g).

Poor tea.
From now on when I see a cake that a vendor describes with something like "forgotten in the back of a warehouse but aged into something good" I'll imagine the teas going through a dark and lonely period in their lives, but ending up strong and beautiful in their maturity, having changed for the better because of the dark times they went through.

I do the dilution method and that works for most things I've tried it with.

Basically, brew one part strong, generally for longer than you would normally brew it. Mix that into one part of room temp or cooler water (not ice). Chill that. You can drink it as is or over ice.

>> No.20512242

>>20512231
So like double or triple what you'd normally brew, and for longer, and then mix it with water? Shame that making cold tea seems to take so much more leaves. I've had some cold bottled tea that I liked but have yet to be able to recreate it. Hopefully I can get it to work at some point.

>> No.20512332

I find it really depends on the tea. I can get away with 8 grams of cheap black tea brewed for 10 minutes to end up with 2 quarts/liters after mixing, but it's really chopped up stuff. I'll usually steep the leaves a second time with half as much water and pour that over ice to drink immediately just to get the most out of them.

Also, I prefer to store it in glass. It might be placebo but I think it just tastes cleaner that way.

I've been confused about the brew time of tea since supposedly brewing for a long time releases more tannins, making it more bitter, but for instance western brewing tends to go for a couple minutes at least and you're saying to brew for 10 minutes. I've only done gong fu and don't usually brew for over a minute at a time with any regularity.

>> No.20512414

>>20512355
It can take some experimentation. 5 minutes might also work but I like the way that specific tea ends up tasting at 10. I'd brew greens for less time but probably still around 2x the normal length. Unless it was something delicate like sencha where I just use more leaf at normal brew times and pour it over ice to drink right away.

The thing with iced tea is you're diluting it so much that the tannins sort of disappear and provide the "bite" when it's cold.

>> No.20512436

>>20512355
Less leaf you have vs the amount of water, the longer you can brew. Those bitter flavours dilute out but it does change the profile of the drink (gong fu is frontloading the good shit). Cold temperature mute too so it's extra important to brew hard.

This. Considering that red meat, grilled/charred/smoked meat, alcohol, the air you breathe, the sun, etc. ad nauseum are all potential carcinogens I just really don't think it's worth worrying about. (Especially since sources often disagree with each other on what is or is not carcinogenic.)

>it's theoretically more controlled
Traditional shou is a polymicrobial wild ferment with nothing that strictly prevents mycotoxin producing flora from growing. This is not like an alcoholic or lactic acid fermentation where the desired microorganisms creates conditions that kill off the "bad" ones. In theory you could create as safer shou by using controlled more sanitary conditions and inoculating the pile with desired microbes but I don't think this is widely done. I know there is one Japanese shou style tea that is made with koji mold that claims to do this however. All in all my hunch would be that dry stored aged sheng probably has less mycotoxins than shou but I can't prove it.
>it's mostly fixed in time.
They age shou in the same places they age sheng. Mold can grow on shou too.

There are a few studies in english out their on the topic of mycotoxins in puerh but more are definitely needed. There are too few to draw definitive conclusions. However while the limited data out there suggests reason for concern it is also not so alarming that I think I need to forswear puerh. Personally I just try to avoid drinking the sketchy stuff too often. If you are really want to optimize for health there are probably bigger things in your life you can optimize first.

so there's two like overall types raw and ripe puerh (or sheng / shou respectively)
raw is lighter and fruitier, but can be somewhat harsh before some aging
ripe is darker and tends to be a bit more 'dank' maybe, but can also be sweet and fruity. it can also be aged but I don't think that's as popular and doesn't add much to the tea (I haven't tried a ton of aged ripe though so maybe someone else can correct me here)
there's quite a bit of variety within those two categories, and some of it isn't so great for the price. it helps to try a few different samples of cakes from each category to get an idea of what you might like.

Is it a little ball strainer or is it one of the big mug ones like picrel? The small ones often don't give the tea enough room to expand.

If you are looking to get into Chinese teas then I would recommend trying it out. You get a lot more control over the teas and some types of tea really benefit from that. Also, I've never had or used a vacuum sealer, what's the best price/performance bracket for those? Cost of vacuum sealable bags? I've had a half of a tea's original vacuum pack heat sealed at a shop once (not vacuum), how about that?
So far what I've done is folding the excess of the package to minimize air pocket and tape it shut. Though I feel it's not the same as an unopened pack. Aged roasted oolongs can be comfy but they don't change anywhere near as much as say young to old sheng. I have had some aged roasted TGY that is quite good. You normally age oolong dry and sealed, possibly reroasting it every so often. I think for some teas after they rest a bit the roast flavor fades into the background and lets the other notes stick out more. If you let it get old enough you may even pick up some aged tea flavor. I really want to get a sealed tin of 30+ year old yancha to see what it is like but it would probably cost a lot.
>If I'm understanding correctly it seems like the baking processes used generally denature any enzymes
While the enzymes that turn tea into black tea are denatured chemical processes still occur. Slow oxidation will continue to occur. Various compound in the tea will slowly continue to react and break down. It is not as fast a process but it should slowly change with age.

It doesn't reach boiling temps (unless you live in the desert or something,) but the sun does raise the temperature a considerable amount. They have positive reviews on etsy so they are probably legit (in that they ship tea to you) however there is not a lot of talk out there on this site.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/PuerhGuy

it may be related to Paolo "Panda" other shops: https://puerh.uk/ https://enlightenmenttea.org/ and https://ChenYuanHao.shop (only the western shop not the brand) If he is not the owner then they may know each other considering the sites share a similar theme, products , are both in the UK, and Paolo has opened multiple shops before.
He is unpopular on reddit for reasons that are not entirely clear to me. He has been accused to overcharging on obscure Taiwanese boutique puerh, simultaneously undercutting Teaswelike on cheaper well known Taiwanese stored puerh (e.g. LFPT), being too into into the woo woo side of tea (probably guilty), and possibly trying to make moves on some girl at a zen retreat or something. As far as I know he does actually ship and sell what he says he does so he is not a scammer in that regard. People don't really seem to complain about the quality of his tea they just hate him.

At least in the west the individuals that are both really into to tea and are outgoing enough to maintain a strong public presence tend to be some flavor of hipster or new age hippie. You also sometimes get normie females who are into "tea time" and the foodies who try tea to seem cultured. If anything /tea/ is kinda idiosyncratic compared to the greater tea community. This is one of my favorite little corners of the internet. I really enjoy my fellow anons here.

After room temp. It adds another cycle, sure, but I've never really noticed much impact when using it up. It's better than letting it get stale.

You don't necessarily need a vacuum sealer, but it's my favorite way to store dry goods in general. I have sealed mason jars full of stuff besides sencha and it's probably about as fresh as you can keep it without also adding oxygen absorbers.

>Wondering if a vacuum sealer makes that big difference.
You're getting rid of a lot (though not all) of the oxygen it can react with, so it definitely delays things. There's a wide range of how much they cost because it goes from manual or handheld stuff all the way to commercial units. FoodSaver types can be found for fairly cheap and the bag material is sold in bulk rolls. But yes, even just sucking/squeezing the air out and sealing as best you can will help.

>Even just refrigerating unopened packs doesn't feel the same compared to unrefrigerated, though I haven't direct AB taste tested it.
Pretty much the whole idea of shincha, but there's really no choice unless you only drink it a few months of the year.

Sun tea like the other anon mentioned. I've never liked the idea though because that's a bacterial growth experiment. Even modern guides for it basically recommend hot-steeping the material beforehand and using a sanitized container.

I'm sure lots of people drink it just fine, but there's a good chance tea is associated with health in the first place because it involves boiling your water.

British afternoon tea culture seems to me that it is not really about the tea so much as the things surrounding it. Much the same way most people who drink beer with the bros are not necessarily that concerned with drinking the best beer. It is a social institution as much as anything. Even in Asia tea snobs are the minority.

I've ordered another couple of sheng puerh cakes and another shou cake. I previously had 2 shou and 2 sheng and stored the two shou together and the two sheng together in the same mylar bags (I still have the two sheng). Should I separate them into separate mylar bags? The two sheng at least taste fairly similar (just one being stronger) so I don't know how much I should bother. The two I just bought have been aged for longer though so I'll probably keep them in their own bags just to be safe.

I'm not really aging them purposely but I'm not drinking them quickly either.

I separate based on category. If they are the same style and similar age they can go together but if they smell significantly different I separate them. For example my young sheng, semiaged sheng, dry aged sheng, and wet aged sheng all end up in different bags. I have enough tea I need to use multiple bags anyways. Some people chose to store everything together though so do what you want.

might have the best body and mouthfeel at this price point. certainly the best in the ripes I've had. extremely thick and slick. flavor-wise it's a simple dark chocolate and wet earth, though it does sometimes have a note similar to vanilla custard, which I enjoy a lot and haven't really gotten from other ripes. today I'm getting some figs in the aroma, which is cool too. tastes less "balanced" and complex to me than Slut and factory ripes, maybe the blend goes really heavy on whatever gives it the body and light on everything else
got a slight bit of wo dui on some brews, but it's not a fish bomb by any means. longevity is what you'd expect from a ripe, nothing special. I recommend pushing it hard for maximum body

overall I'm happy with Peak Vulture. it's a must-try if you really value body in ripes, otherwise it's less enticing but still a nice way to try a pretty distinctive ripe on a budget
