If you have never bought a full cake before the bangwei small trees is a safer buy, or even the naka if you want something bitter that's a little more accessible. Don't wanna tell you not to get the lao man e, it's good tea but its definitely a somewhat intense experience. That cake isn't an example of the most bitter tea that comes out of that village but its still pretty prominent.

Dayi/tae tea set up there own Amazon storefront for direct sales which is why its a good place to get those teas, but as you saw the selection is limited.
If you are in the US you could grab a couple cheap xiaguan tuos from puershop. Puershop is kind of a weird store but xiaguan is a pretty consistent brand, expect some smokey flavor and sweetness, a bit of bite.

Agreed, most of my favorite oolongs are middle ground price wise actually. Same with shous/shengs, some really high end one really accent specific flavors that may or may not be desirable. Plus I get 1.5x the tea for the same price.
Oolongs in general will be more pricey(besides compared to white teas) but in my opinion as much as I love black teas, oolongs generally are better tasting to me personally and usually have more interesting flavors so I don't mind spending a bit more.

Today's tea: Den’s Tea Guricha
This is first Japanese tea I have had in years. I've not had many Japanese teas yet. The tea liquor is a bright yellow green. Never had a tea quite this bright colored before, it really is like the pictures. The tea has a herbaceous aroma and tastes intensely of green beans with a bitter herbaceous punch. Later steeps brings out some seaweed and spinach notes. Very savory and refreshing. I really should try to get green tea more often. While not the proper way to brew it I used my gaiwan which worked surprisingly well. Just have to be careful not to add too much tea because it is so fragmentary and brews fast. I used 165f water as well which helped prevent it from overbrewing.

The whites that you like, different ones can vary significantly from one another.
There are grades based on the leaves picked, bai hao yin zhen aka silver needle (all buds), bai mu dan aka white peony (bud and a leaf), and shou mei aka longevous eyebrow (bud and three or four leaves), and higher grades generally taste more floral, less astringent and less fruity, though this is partly a consequence of higher grades being oxidized less and processed with more care to keep the bus intact.
So, if you're looking to try a soft, lighter, more floral and grassy tea, look for silver needle, white if you're looking for a stronger, more fruity, arguably less complex tea with a more pronounced aroma maybe try a small yue guang bai cake.

They are both sold as "Moonlight White" style teas albeit neither are made from the type of tea plant that gives it a silver and black "moonlight" appearance. i dont have it but on the site i thought it says it varies each month because of the many different teas they send you. you probably should not rely on them sending you enough tea for a month, to me it looks like its oriented for people who want to consistently try many teas while additionally buying stuff they already like on the side, but someone who is actually subscribed to the monthly box will probably be able to give more insight.

I was gonna do a write-up on Japanese green teas but got lazy. Still could, let me know if you need info on selecting and buying greens. Anyway after 5 trips to and from Kyushu in the past year, I've gotten much better at not fucking up common teas, so here's the data I've collected for best taste. Recommend 120ml kyusu with mesh lining and a borosilicate chahai, 45ml ceramic tea or sake cup, vacuum thermos, temp-control electric kettle or at least a thermometer
My parameters produce a stronger and more umami-sweet first steep, minimize bitterness, and balance the vegetation and bitterness from second steep on. Found out the hard way through trial and error. Package directions don't always work.

>Sencha, general and fukamushi
3.5 ("light taste" type) to 4.5g leaf
Bring water to 73~78 degrees C then pour directly into cool thermos to get temp between 72 and 75c. On my kettle, this is achieved by setting water to "warm" (70c) then to "5 minute simmer" (85c) for about 30 seconds before shutting it off manually. Warm pitcher and cup with water.
1st steep: 72~75c water, 100-120ml, steep for 50s then gently pour out. Rap the bottom of the kyusu with your palm 3 or so times to level out the leaves, then sharply pour out the residuals.
2nd steep: same water and volume, 20 seconds
3rd steep is optional, but 50 seconds if you're going to

>Kabuse
4g leaf
Bring water to 70c (warm function on my kettle) and hold. Warm cup but not chahai.
1st steep: pour about 90ml into cool chahai, then from chahai into kyusu. Steep 1m30s.
2nd steep: warm kettle water to around 75c and pour into thermos, same as sencha method. 90ml into kyusu. Steep for 30s.
3rd steep: Thermos water, steep for one minute.
4th step optional, try 85-95c water for one minute if you're curious

>Yame gyokuro
5g leaf. Otherwise the same as kabuse parameters.

>Tenkaichi gyokuro
Follow the package directions. If you're paying 30 bucks for 50g it should tell you exactly how to brew it.

>> No.20355196

>>20355165 cont'd
Kabuse has a lot of options, it's said that you can brew it like sencha or like gyokuro. I've found that it's better (for my tastes) to brew yame gyokuro somewhat differently than standard, which is usually something intense like 10g leaf and 80ml water. I go for half of that because despite how much nips keep gaslighting me there is a very distinct, strong, astringent vegetation to yame that needs to be restrained with a higher water to leaf ratio.
Anyway, I brew kabuse with almost the same parameters, never like a sencha or tenkaichi gyokuro. And I find that once I bring the water to the 70-80 range, I don't feel like I have to keep raising it. Many Japanese enjoy a strong bitterness in their last steep. I don't. I think they get around that by pairing tea with snacks; tradition dictates that you never eat snacks with the first steep of tea, always with the second steep on.

>Genmaicha/matcha-added genmaicha
Relatively forgiving but don't go crazy. Bring water to 85c then dump into thermos. Warm chahai and cup.
1st steep: 5g leaf, 6g if you want it extra strong, 120ml water from thermos, 30-50s.
2nd steep: 10s.
3rd steep: 30-60s.

>Hojicha
It's a roast tea so crank it up. Boil water (100c) and pour directly into your thermos to lower it to around 90-95c. Warm your chahai but not your cup.
1st steep: 5g or 6g depending on the quality and notes of your leaf. Each label is different. 120ml, 45s.
2nd steep: 30s.
3rd steep: 45-60s.

I still need to try asatsuyu and something-midori to see if they have special parameters, but the above has worked for Kyushu fukamushi, Kyoto organic sencha, and Shizuoka "light taste" sencha

>> No.20355454

>>20355196

Saemidori is a bit more sweet and doesn't get as bitter as most sencha cultivars from what I've tried

I love Jap greens, but I've never been into heavy brewing autism. they do benefit from it way more than most teas admittedly. I just tend to go 1 to 1.5 minute for first brew, 1-10seconds for second brew and third and fourth is whatever. temperature is 70 degrees for first two brews, 80 for the third one and 95 for fourth

meanwhile, I'm brewing some fresh spring Chinese green tea grandpa style right now and it's perfectly fine. really different styles of tea overall

Anons, where are you getting black tea from these days? In the US and I can find generic Assam and Ceylon teas if I go to an Indian grocery store, and there's a few options on Amazon under the Davidson's label that are good. I used to order from Upton Tea but their prices for everything went up 600% in the past few years. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just want a decent daily brew.

If i end up with a tea that doesn't separate on it's own i usually will split large chunks into two thinner layers by putting the chunk on it's side and jamming a pick in. This is usually enough to allow the two smaller pieces to open up without creating too much excessive breakage. I find that trying to break up really compressed pieces further then that mostly just results in lots of broken leaves.
>>20354356
You basically get $20 worth of tea and pay $10 for shipping each month. In terms of quality of tea per dollar its not a great deal. The appeal is that you get to try all kind of interesting uncommon teas and experiments. Definitely you do as a supplementary just for fun addition to your regular tea purchases.

I quite like Jasmine tea.
Some are sensitive to turn bitter or have too much jasmine aroma. I steep at 80°C for quite a long time. The jasmine aroma fades quickly in subsequent steeps so I'd recommend western style for it.

Just a good classic ceylon, use a generous amount of tea for each brew. If you have a middle eastern food market near you you can find it even cheaper.
We had a poster from somewhere over there a while ago who tested like three dozen brands and that was his favorite that seems to be easily available in the us.

It's not a cost optimal method, it's more for surprise and variety of things to try. Usually a worse cost to tea ratio than sampler packs.
they can be fun, but it's not a decent amount of tea unless you only drink 1-2 times per week max.
Personally I'd use that 30ish bucks for 2x50gr of decent tea I haven't tried instead, but it's up to you.

Today's tea: Red Blossom Tea’s Snow Dragon
The dry leaves look like a cross between a dragonwell green tea and a silver needle white tea. It is light and fluffy like a white tea as well. Reminds me a bit of a tea that I had a sample of once which was sold as wild silver needles. It tastes kind of like how you would expect it to with both parts of this hybrid tea showing through. On one end you have a delicate nutty green bean taste from on the other you have some Fuding white tea character that I am having a hard time putting in more precise words. The green tea side is the more prominent though. It has got a nice strong sweetness to it as well. I would say it is a very nice tea overall. Sometime I will try to grab some more fluffy whitish green teas to compare with.

Another question - has anyone noticed a difference in the quality of Turkish tea in recent times? I drank it practically by the gallon in the early 2010's, but I've bought some twice in the past three years (both pink and yellow packages - I've never been able to learn for sure what the differences are supposed to be) it always tasted foul, but there was nothing obvious amiss with the dry leaves.

>cherry blossom tea? How do you do it?
I would assume
Harvest cherry blossoms early in the morning
Spread out on a sheet or something on a table in your yard or on your patio or whatever and sun dry them
Once dry store in jar
Add dry blossoms to hot water
Tea
If you want to make scented tea
Harvest fresh blossoms
Mix with the finished dry tea you want to scent
Leave overnight in some sort of baking dish or pot uncovered with the tea and blossoms heaped together.
Next morning, spread tea and blossoms and dry in sun, the tea will have picked up moisture from the fresh buds and needs to be dried
Remove the blossoms
Repeat several times or as desired
For the last drying you can leave the blossoms in if you like how they look.
Store in mason jar or other airtight container.
That's basically how they make osmanthus tea or jasmine tea so im assuming the same would apply to cherry blossoms.

Today's tea: Hatvala’s Fish Hook Green Tea
This is my first time trying a Vietnamese tea I think. I have been wanting to try tea from there for a while. The leaves are very finely hand into little lose curls. Looks like it is a fine grade picking. The taste reminds me of roasted chestnuts. Strongly sweet and savory. It is maybe more nutty tasting then green tasting. The tea’s has a brothy mouthfeel and finish is crisp and and drying. I really like this tea, it seems distinctive from the other Chinese green teas I have had in the past. However, I am not that experienced with green teas yet.

You can boil it with some baking soda in a pot on the stove to clean it.
You can get one of these tea brew baskets like pic related, they still let some dust through but they are good if you just want to brew some tea in a mug.

Yes
No, it's about the same us using a tea strainer like this >>20359606 which I use at work. The more noticeable taste difference comes from when at work I brew using the strainer in a stainless tumbler vs. a ceramic mug. At home I use the pictured pot and a yunomi or chawan to drink out of. Tastes the same as the strainer and the ceramic mug setup. Even still, the largest taste difference comes from the water source: at home I have an RO filter system to drink from. At work it's just normal sediment/carbon filters, and mostly tastes the same as RO. Straight city/well water tastes bad.

First impressions on the white teas are alright. Can't say I like them as much as I did Moon Waffles though, they don't have that nice creamy milkiness or strong sweetness. The Jingmai one is herbal in an interesting way, the other one is closer to a black tea with a bit of honey and apple.
The green tea is great though. Really savory and aromatic, a bit different from the more sweet and roasty Chinese greens.

Today's tea: Smile Tea’s Organic Kabusecha Sencha
More green tea today as it befits the season. I don’t really know how to visually grade sencha as it is supposed to be somewhat broken up but the tea looks fine. Lots of nice dark green needles and strands. It is a Kabusecha and therefore I think it is supposed to have a darker color do to having been shaded. It maybe is marginally darker than the Guricha I had the other day but if there is a difference it is subtle. This time the green tea is more asparagus forward with some sugar pea sweetness rounding out the flavor. Some baked winter squash flavors come out after the the first couple steeps. The tea seems nice to me. Brewing in a gaiwan is probably the best choice for this tea but still can work if you are ok with a strong cup.

For framer leaf cakes i would recommend this spring naka.

And Bangwai small trees
https://www.farmer-leaf.com/collections/hidden-locations/products/spring-2023-bangwai-small-trees
The naka should scratch a similar itch as the 7542 and the bangwei is tasty and accessible.
As far as other teas i would suggest this cake. (Don't worry about the Russian it's a Chinese shop the owner is just marketing to them) flat $5 shipping.

As far as going for cheaper stuff then that it's definitely possible but gets a little tricky.
This is another tea factory's version of that dayi 7542, there is the chance it could be a bit rough around the edges but it's cheap and should be pretty similar to the cake you bought.
https://www.fullchea-tea.com/products/2020-haiwan-7548-raw-puer-batch-201-sheng-puerh-tea-cake-357g

If you still have the wrapper for the cake you bought could you take a look at the back of the wrapper? There should be a date with a stamp on it somewhere that will tell you when the cake you bought was made and will maybe help me make recommendations.
Overall those final cakes i listed from haiwan and xiaguan are the closest to cheap and something like what you bought last time.

Today's tea: "fresh kettle" first flush Darjeeling
The dry leaves are a bit broken up but that seems typical for Indian teas. This one does not appear quite as green as some first flush Darjeelings but I do not have any other on hand to compare with. However it still has some greenish leaves in it which you would not typically find in a Chinese black tea. You can smell the distinctive “muscatel” note characteristic of Darjeeling teas off the dry leaves. The tea liquor is burnt orange in color. The taste reminds me somewhat grape skins and citrus zest. It is a little bit like an oriental beauty but less sweet and instead more tannic and “malty”. I like it, it has some of that Indian tea kick without being overbearing or unpleasant to drink plain like a lot Indian CTC teas.

I have no idea what the context is hence I wanted to know the source. I am guessing the moral of the story is don't break into a puerh lesbians pumidor if you want to live.

there is literally no adverse effects to caffeine unless if it messes with your sleep. So as long as you are not hypersensitive to it, and/or drink it in the evenings, you can simply reap the benefits of it without suffering any downsides. Sure take everything in moderation, but there is no reason to say that caffeine is not good for you in the general sense when its proven to be quite the opposite.

Today’s tea: Thés du Japon’s Awa-bancha (strong fermentation)
I have been looking forward to trying some Japanese heicha for a long time so I am hoping this will be good. This tea is made with anerobic lactic acid fermentation which is unlike any common Chinese heicha. First off the tea leaves are hilariously light and fluffy. I had to wet the leaves to get them all to fit in my gaiwan without crushing them. I added the leaves over the first three steeps. The leaves themselves look kinda like sheng huang pian. It’s aroma gives of a slight hint of vinegar or ammonia. The taste is a bit sour and tangy with some citrus or citronella notes. It reminds me a lot of baked kale chips. It has the same savory roasted green note to it. Almost even tastes a bit salty. I really like this tea and plan to grab some more at some point. I am curious to know how this tea would age.

A very kind and very generous neighbor hooked me up with a puerh cake this evening. I'll spare the details, but I know this tea was purchased in Taiwan and eventually brought to USA. It's my first CNNP I've ever had. Given the undated wrapper, I suspect it's early 2000s. I am absolutely CHUFFED to be gifted this unexpectedly. Hard to express.
I kindly ask for any help with identifying, if such a thing is even possible. But I don't consider it important to accurately identify exactly what I have. It will be consumed by me either way.

The stains on the wrapper, insert, and (obviously) the material suggest it's a ripe puerh. I don't think I've ever seen this little ribbon nei fei before, however. Looks like good stuff to me.

yet another question, is there anything wrong with just breaking apart a whole cake right from the get go, does it get stale or something

>> No.20369282

>>20369244
Damn that's cool
Identifying a cake like that can be pretty tricky, the chise collectors have big books with pictures of old cakes and identity them based on different fonts or text colors and the different textures of the paper wrapper. Most of the puer that was being made back then had some variation of that same label with the symbol in the middle.
The fact that it's a 2 kilogram cake makes it pretty unique, it was probably intended for gifting or made as some special commemorative piece.
The tea looks nice too, can you post a picture of the back of the cake?
Back then it was common for nifei to be a loose insert or easily removable because the tea dealers would rewrap the cakes in custom wrappers or add their own tags to them.
Im sure it could be identified but it's probably beyond /tea/.
>>20369258
You can break up the whole cake if you want, you do want to try to store it in something airtight if possible, though im not sure how your neighbor was storing it or what you climate is like.

Actually looking at it some more it isn't quite a standard label, it says (some town or region name) jiashen? annual limit 2000kg i thought it said the cake is 2000g but it's probably referring to this specific batch of tea and how big it was.
Can you post a picture of the little piece of paper inside that says some chinglish about drinking tea?
Also there is nothing printed on the back of the wrapper? No stamps or anything?

I thought so too. The bottom section looks well enough, but there's no glyph I recognize on the top half except cha. No 七子, no 云南, no 饼茶. I haven't seen noticed something like it before, not that I can remember anyway.
I also checked the wrapper very closely, there is nothing else printed or stamped on it. Nor is there any other nei fei aside from the ribbon. Here is the insert, which looks pretty typical.

>I kindly ask for any help with identifying, if such a thing is even possible.
I cant ID it but someone else may be able to. The "Ban Zhang organic" on the front is kind of sus but the tea itself looks good. However those CNNP wrappers (and their many bootlegs) can be very difficult or impossible to definitively ID because they often reused them and they were frequently generic in the first place. Also the references on the topic are all in Chinese. I know of some books that can help ID puerh from the early 2000s but I doubt anyone here owns them.
https://www.teaforum.org/viewtopic.php?t=1409

Do have pictures of the ticket? Is there any writing on the back of the wrapper?

>>20369244
>I don't think I've ever seen this little ribbon nei fei before
Sometimes they throw that in there especially when they want to denote a special or more premium production but it does not not really tell much on its own.
>the material suggest it's a ripe puerh.
Agreed, quality looks good too unlike some CNNP mystery ripes.

>>20369258
>is there anything wrong with just breaking apart a whole cake right from the get go, does it get stale or something
You can break it all up and put it in a jar if you want. It possibly effects aging but not necessarily in a good vs bad way. A lot of puerh enthusiasts just prefer to to keep them in cakes and chip off only what they need.

Don't forget to tell us how it tastes!

Ya sure it isn't a 2 metric ton cake? I want to know how big that would be. Imagine the size of the bing hole...

>> No.20369350

>>20369250
looks like a few years old ripe, heavily steamed for the bing pressing, shitty summer material (standard for a ripe) kept in the nylon bag for some time before blending and pressing, the hay and other organic matter suggest real rustic china provenance.
the squished black clumps and dried out light buds suggest further manipulation of the maocha for the appearance.
the pristine white threads on the red-white ribbon also suggest the young age/scam.
could be a drinkable shou, but the spotty white round mould points almost always signify some chink fuckery with rushing of the fermentation.

rinse twice before drinking, if it tastes wrong outside of pond and mushroom smell of a shou pwar, consider gifting it back.

Thank you. I absolutely will. It's been sitting in a drawer in a very dry kitchen for some time. The cake didn't smell very strong. I plan on letting it sit in proper storage for a while, but I'm sure I'll cave and try a bit this weekend anyway.
>>20369324
Thank you. Yes I know identifying can be a fool's errand, doubly so in the West. Still, I can't resist doing a little digging. The ticket is posted above. There is nothing else on the wrapper nor insert.
>>20369350
Interesting assessment! I won't rule anything out. A photo will always have trouble capturing something. To me, it looks like a solid cake.

>> No.20369386

>>20369366
I will also add that that I am not sure when "Banzhang" became a well enough known location to put on wrappers. I don't think it was till the later 2000s but I could be wrong. Also if it actually contains any Banzhang material it is probably "Banzhang area" and not actually LaoBanZhang.

overall my thoughts on farmerleaf raws so far are:
>2023 Fall Lao Man E
really distinctive fragrance and flavor profile, very fun to drink. savory, bitter, strong mineral texture. great tea
>2023 Fa Zhan He
lemon, savory herbal, green beans, a bit of honey or cotton candy sometimes. not super complex or long lasting but really pleasant, especially for the price.
>2023 Nannuo
good balanced Menghai tea with hints of apple and some cooling huigan. I wouldn't pay 160$ for a full cake though. it's a bit more complex than the LME, but not as distinctive
>Jingmai Yellow Flakes
mixed feelings on this one. good sweetness, but the flavor can be a bit weird. maybe I'm just not that into huangpian
>2023 Dong Guo
really tart and citrusy. probably not a daily drinker for me, but fun to sample
>2023 Zhu Tang
strong sweetness, strong floral aroma, soft. quite nice
>2022 Jingmai Miyun
I thought it was quite boring
>2023 Bangwai and Tang Fang Liang Zi
fruity softies. not really my style, but I liked both better than the Miyun. would consider Bangwai, since it's the cheapest of the three

I mostly agree with your assessments for the ones ive tried.
I really wanted to like the jingmai miyun since that's a tea FL actually made but it was meh. I think i had the 23 version.
I would probably buy a nanno if i had the cash to splash, something it has going on i find pretty engaging.
Fa zhan i agree, i thought the endurance was average to good.
Bangwei its a softie but its just such an easy tea to reach for and i didn't find it boring, and again reasonably good endurance
Lao man e is really impressive for a $50 cake
