How do you actually git good at cooking? When you reach that point of semi competent home cook that knows basic flavors combinations, home cooked meals and can improvise, making most most online recipes useless.
Are there any cornerstone culinary books or other resources that allow for an in depth dive into different countries culinary arts?

The way you get better at cooking, is the way you get better at anything; practice. The more you cook, and the more you analyse, taste and try to improve your dishes, the better the cook you’ll be in general. You’ll just gather an understanding of food, and the science and principles behind certain methods and techniques. Of course reading and researching things can help, there’s a wealth of knowledge out there in the form of cooks and online media, but actual practice and cooking yourself is the best way to improve.

Practice and imagination. You should have a high enough IQ to imagine what might well together. Though there are always surprises.

Here's a tip for you: smell your spices and whatever you are cooking. If they smell good together they will taste good together. Taste your food as you cook it to make sure you are on the right track. Practice, practice, practice.
