This is such a fucking weasel-word. Journalists use it to imply causation in order to scare people into reading their clickbait. But all the study showed is that more people who were intermittently fasting died of heart problems. Absent a specifically explained biological process for why fasting would harm the heart, this data is just as likely to imply that there is variable not controlled for in the study that increases the rate of heart problems and the rate of people engaging in intermittent fasting.

I'd say it's more likely that the culprit here is obesity. We know that obesity causes heart disease, and who are the people most likely to pursue fad diets? Fat people trying to lose weight, probably because they've had some sort of health crisis related to their obesity.
