Like all fast food, it was actually good when it started. You get someone who wants to make good shit, it gets popular, then it gets more investors and shit to make it grow. Then it spread, went corporate, and after enough hands changed in leadership, eventually you get an asshole MBA trying to profit max and cuts corners to get it. And over time, that corner cutting and bullshit stacks up and you get negative feedback loops going, and shit spirals downhill. Nostalgia is what keeps shit like this alive, and because there isn't an immediate negative response to corner cutting, they get away with profit maxxing, and jump ship to avoid the problems after a year or two. Then the next MBA comes in to profit maxx and shit repeats.

This is also why some fast food places are still good while others are shit. CFA corporate keeps their shit tight and running properly, but the second they start cutting corners and installing DEI shit, CFA will join all the other failing fast food places.

Before McDonalds, you had car-service barbeques that would take a while and served whatever the cook knew how to make. There was no consistency and you never knew how long it might take.

McDonalds reinvented the formula through basically the scientific method. They created a simple product that could be made within minutes or received within seconds of ordering. They optimized their menu to trim the fat, optimized how their kitchen operates to increase speed (the Speedee system), and the result was a convenient hot meal at a reasonable price, something that was basically unheard of until that point.

As they grew they expanded into other markets while keeping their efficiency similar. They also had HUGE marketing efforts for different audiences (see >>20313509) as well as the McDonald Land for child-friendly marketing. If you can get a kid in, you get the parents too and now you've doubled your sales.

It doesn't need to be a high class experience, even as it was competing against In and Out in the early days. Marketing, brand awareness, and widespread appeal is better than doing any one thing well.

The best you can do if you want to get an idea of what it was luke is to go to Japan. Yes, seriously. McDonalds there is today maybe not quite as good as the original restaurants back in the US during the golden era, but still leaps and bounds beyond anything you will find in the US today.

This is likely due to a concept called 生き甲斐 / "ikigai", which describes the traditional care and utmost respect Japanese people demonstrate in every single action they take. Apply 生き甲斐 to cooking, even if it's just at a McDonald's, and the result WILL be noticeable.

Most fast food shakes taste like shit compared to how they did in the 00's. Mcdonalds in particular tastes especially bad though, like most fast food shakes are acceptable but Mcdonalds shakes taste like a chemical spill with chocolate syrup drizzled on top. Shake Shack has fantastic shakes but they aren't anywhere near as ubiquitous as McDick's and they're pretty expensive, but at least the food quality matches the price tag there. Honestly, shakes are the one thing that really seems different at every fast food place. Burgers on the other hand all taste practically identical and it really just depends on how big the patties they serve are and what toppings/condiments are available at each chain that makes the difference.

Went for the first time in like 6 years recently. Got a filet o fish combo. Cost me like over 10 dollars, even after downloading their scam app.

The food was TRASH. the amount of fish you get is miniscule, and more akin tona fish finger quality, mostly breading, in-between two extremely fake "bread" buns - more like air computer generated polystyrene. Was put together like complete shit but some lazy retard. Waaay too much tartre sauce that I had to scrape off and a poorly torn half slice of aheese. I made it through half the burger and just felt eating more would be terrible for my health. So I just picked the breading off and ate the fish meat, which was just micron thick pieces of "fish" and I couldn't even tell the species AT ALL - could have been anything. I tried the fries which were okay but too salty and the oil theybwere fried I'm seemed old and rancid and I figured inwas mostly just eating seed oil and salt with hardly any micronutrients. I got coke with sugar but it just tasted like watered down crap and the cup was so thin it started feeling it was going to break and leak everywhere. The whole meal aside from the meager amount of fish just didn't even seem like actualnrecognizable food. Just ultra processed garbage evlxtrenely high in macronutrient calories but with little to no actual nutrition. I threw most of the meal out and felt thoroughly ripped off and the old oil smell lingered in my car for a while. Honestly it felt more akin to a mild poisoning than a meal. And for the price incoumd have got cheap sushi or a decent sandwich or even a pie and a drink which would have actual meat instead.

Dunno why anyone would go there? Only positive was ordering on the TV screen which was fun - going through the extensive menu and seeing everything, not having to interact with anyone. But overall it was extremely poor quality good at a high price for what it is.
