A lot of times I find that the Wegman's stuff is better than the ordinary big name standard brands.

Here's an exception, Chicken biskit, the generic one sucks compared to the real one especially with ez-cheese.

Honest question -- with basic ingredients, shit like pasta, flour, canned vegetables/beans/fruits, basic spices, etc etc. is there any reason not to buy store brand?

No. I worked for a time in a food factory that did both its own brand food as well as store brands for two big chains. Store brand uses the exact same quality of ingredients as the own brand, the only difference is the recipe, which is slightly tweaked so it doesn't obviously taste the same as the own brand. Manufacturers are bound by contract to provide a certain level of quality for store brands, and the stores enforce those contracts with their own QA tests and harsh penalties, so you are guaranteed a good quality product unless the stores change the the quality guidelines themselves. So just buy store brand anything, basic ingredients and prepared stuff.

The only thing I would recommend avoiding though is value range, that stuff is sourced from shitholes and is usually of questionable quality.
