Theyre mostly about the packaging such as chili mac coming in a plastic pouch to save weight over a can at the grocery store. For me its the novelty of them. I'd consider finding the content list and building one yourself from grocery items. /out/ and /k/ sometimes have threads about this.

They're great if you're going /out/. Easy to pack, easy to heat'n'eat, great variety when it comes to meals.
Only cons is that they're usually very expensive compared to just packing your own food, and if you're living off them for days you're going to shit the most massive log of your life once you get home.

It's been a while that I've seen it, but when it came up, like a month ago with my dad, I told him it was like six cans of tuna.

I have no idea if that's accurate. But, I did the good work and introduced him to Steve with a couple more videos...we also watched two of those pilot "back in vietnam or wwII" on-body survival kits.

(both of which turned out to be cancelled before being produced...but, whatever...")

Still made for pretty decent family time.

They are worth buying for fun and trying them out if you haven't been in military (good on you) but you're curious.
For actual prepping or camping them are quite overpriced compared to putting together something yourself. And you can find a million instructions on how to do that online.
The ones I've had from the Danish army weren't bad eating, though. I see memes sometimes about how horrible MREs are but I never really had any complaints. As Steve's videos show, it varies a LOT between countries and branches.
But no, for a camping trip or something like that I would not waste my money.

>> No.20280776

I love the survival kits with all the gadgets.
Apparently at least the Viet-Nam ones proved pretty useless and they just replaced all the neat gear with a backup radio.
As men we like to think we could do all kinds of Rambo shit with all that stuff but it just didn't work out that way in real life.

It seems that European rations are markedly superior to American MRE's.

>> No.20282312

>>20278411
Overall, not really. MREs you get are surplus, meaning they've outlasted their use and are near expiration and were sold off to recoup costs. As a result you tend to get busted ass heaters that don't activate, and a good amount of the mains are literally vomit inducing. There are definitely good meals, but if you get cases you are getting soy veggie shit with it. Only about 50% of a case of MREs actually have good stuff, the rest is garbo. Even then you aren't beating canned goods from the grocery. Buying singles you are going to pay a silly markup for them that makes them overpriced shit.

The best ones are actually the cold weather ones, they are max comfy. They are Mountain House meals that are freeze dried, and are pretty damn good. To be honest, you are better off just getting the MH meals from the store and skipping the addons, the gusseted pack is light years better. Also, PEAK makes slightly better FD meals now, though they cost more than MH.

Foreign MREs are a meme, they suck just as much as western ones, but in different ways. The Chinese ones might kill you. The only upside is tea over coffee. The upside is you might get a really cool main. Also way overpriced because of all the shipping and middle men required to get them.

>> No.20282316

>>20279595
They all have beverage bags, either clear or brown. You slap that crap in with the main to heat the water. Assuming you have a working heater.

>> No.20282338

>>20280700
>I see memes sometimes about how horrible MREs are but I never really had any complaints

You haven't had to eat ALL of the MREs in a lineup, that is why you have no complaints. Anyone can grab the shining star of a MRE line up and go "WOW SO GOOD DESU". Meanwhile, you get to ignore the retard in the corner - the vomelt, the soy veggie shit, the 4 fingers of death, etc. The ones the troops avoid. That being said, some of the meals do be slapping above what you can get in the grocery, so it's not all bad.

The foreign ones can be a little easier, they don't have 24+ meal entries like the US does. They usually have 2-4 entries, so it can be easier to just be "good". But even the Russian MRE I've sampled was just spam in a soft can and terrible crackers.

Did 4 years in the infantry and pic rel was my favorite, everyone always tried to get the tuna mre, and the vegetarian ones were always left to get rat fucked. Overall they’re pretty decent when you heat them up, you always want to add crushed up crackers and the cheese spread into your main. People only complain about them if they’re stuck eating them every day either on deployed or in the field because they do get old, or they rarely ever eat them so they don’t know how to prepare them correctly

>Are MREs worth buying?
No. Buy a single one if you're really that interested in boiling water in a bag. It's just a shitty tv dinner, everything that's in them you can find elsewhere on the shelf like candy, peanut butter, hot sauce. Even the main is identical to the generic frozen junk they sell in stores.
