Agreed. Every so often I think about just offering to cut the bread myself, but then I realize what an ass I’d have thought a customer was if the pulled that.

I had a customer ask for extra mayo, so I glooped it on thick. She wanted more, so I took another pass. She wanted more, so in frustration I filled the boat and just laid the meat on top of the mayo moat. Cold cut combo, because obviously mayo lady wanted the worst meat sub.

She came back after eating, told me it was the best sandwich she’d ever had and gave me a dollar tip.

I remember the walls had old newspaper photos like out of the Cheers opening. Hell, it may still look like that. Shit doesn't change all that often in a small town. Our booths were yellow. I used to get the pastrami foot longs, but they stopped offering those at my location in the late 90s for some reason. I liked the V-cut they used to do with the loaf better than the basic shit they do now. That was unique and made it special. I know entire documentaries have been made about it, and it's obvious, but Subway really has just gradually been going downhill for as long as I can remember.

I was born in '85. I'm well aware everyone (mostly) is nostalgic for the time and place they grew up, but the early 90's were unironically fucking awesome. That doesn't have much to do with Subway, though. I specifically said that everything else (specifically having to do with food) has gotten better, so maybe Subway only seems so bad now relative everything else that's become ubiquitous (it's probably a combination of both; Subway has definitely gotten worse).

Also, my parents are literal boomers (48/50), and every Christmas I remember my dad saying something like, "holy fuck, toys are so much cooler than when I was your age!" (Yes, he literally said that to a 9 year old on Christmas morning.) Other than food and technology, pretty much everything has gotten worse over the last 25 years.

Here's a 1993 employee training video. Most of the subways I went to as a kid looked more like this.
They had old newspaper clippings plastered all over the wall. the tables had the subway routes on them, but they were all really small so the amount of them on the table made it look like some schizo had assembled a never ending subway map.

I tried subway again because I remember it from when it looked like your photo. It was genuinely good for the price, one of my faves as a highschooler.
The sandwich is like 1/3 smaller than your pic, and you get maybe 1/2 the ingredients. And the ingredients are shit, they have switched fully to fake reformed chicken that looks like old tofu. And the "steak" is like a brown sauce they smear on the bread.
