If it isn't made in Kentucky it isn't bourbon. Just because the US doesn't have the extreme purity laws of the UK which regulate what you can call Scotch or how you can label wine doesn't mean some nip slapping a Bourbon label on a bottle of whiskey magically makes it Bourbon.

that's not true. only bourbon made in kentucky can be called 'kentucky bourbon'. Bourbon can generally be from anywhere in the U.S. Both Canada and, the E.U., i think, both require that it be made in the U.S. to be sold as bourbon. some whiskeys are denoted by geography whereas others are by the nature of the product--the mash bill, process, etc. it's all rather confusing.

this. They'd like to compete in the world of whisky, but ehh, surely not worth the import taxes and their newb status. Asians are perfectionists, and they are winning some acclaim, but here's what I have to say:

When I took the tour at the (Jameson) Midleton original distillery, with friends while driving around Ireland (oh, good 15 years ago), I was the one person in my party willing to undergo the full taste testing at 10 in the morning (after drinking all night every night).
You always want a bit of water when doing a taste test.

So, I compared a total of at least 30 world bourbons, scotches and whiskys of various ages and blends. They decanted the american, canadian, and some of their nice old stuff too. I learned that ireland solved the smoky mossy/peaty flavor taint with their toasted groats placed above the floor of a roman bath (bricks heated from underneath, ie no smoke and no peat flavor tainting it). Then, they do triple distill, in copper no less, but then the aging is within previously used sherry casks, which had held sherry long enough for the spirts to access the sweet caramelly partial char under the first layer of charred wood (part of barrel making), and it has a touch of sherry nuace which adds complexity and that age too. Jameson and their other brands ARE special, and once you've had corn, rye, and dear god rice of all things, and other world products on your palate, you'll appreciate it. Blends are just fine. Sure it's cool that single malt eventually made a nice product, oh wow the rarity, but it's not about flavor to restrict a whisky to the term to make it great. Age matters, how it was made, from what, and how it was stored and blended. If you want smoke, you might find mezcal your thing (I don't).

Try it, train your palate, and then invest in a nicer bottle from rankings.

I had this for the first time recently and thought it tasted like an actually palatable Scotch whisky. not amazing but not pukeworthy like say a bottle of J&B which literally tastes like puke in a bottle to me. And yes I have tasted more expensive Scotches they all taste like shit to me. So I would say go for a Suntory it tastes like a milder more well rounded Scotch. Has nothing to do with hibiki specifically

Japan's whisky industry had a pretty big downturn from the late 1980s until the mid 2000s, and only from ~2008 onwards did their whisky production start to increase, and popularity of Japanese whisky ALSO happened to pick up at the time, so we're basically hitting a point in time where a lot of people are now looking for Japanese whisky and there simply isn't a massive amount of the stuff available, unless it's the younger stuff, and even that is sought after at this point simply because it's from japan.

The hardcore bourbon guys didn't like it, the hardcore scotch guys wouldn't touch it. The "weeb bait" thing sounds funny but there is a lot of truth to it. I'm finishing my bottle now. It is extremely spiced with coriander and orange peel. Probably best on the rocks after sitting for 30 seconds or so, especially if you're trying it out for the first time. There are other options that are much less pungent and have a more complex flavor palate. I still like this though for sipping. Looking for my next one which seems to be an issue of supply more or less though.
