If you actually make an effort to count kcal and macros, the food pyramid provides enough nutrition variation to keep a sedentary person thin, or give a bodybuilder sufficient protein.
The only mistake of food pyramid authors was assuming Americans have capacity for rational thought. Instead they interpreted "grains and potatoes" as "candy bars, tv dinners and coke".

Nobody ever cared about the food pyramid, ever. Nobody ever talked about it or recommended it as something to follow despite seeing it. People talk about it more now than they ever did back when it was new.

But you're right about people not understanding it. They still don't understand it. It tells you to have 2 slices of whole grain bread with each meal and people are acting like it tells you to eat 6 full loaves. It tells you that you can eat a serving of meat and dairy at every meal and people act like it tells you to just not eat these things at all. People act like it tells you to not get naked and run through the streets but they do it anyway.
