Italian sandwiches have a lot of ingredients and should have a lot of oil and vinegar, so no separation between the bread helps keep it together better, otherwise most of it ends up in your lap.

The biggest issue isn't the two sides of bread touching dicks. It's the token veggies in place of something worthwhile, like pickled onions or fresh parsley.

I like extra mayo and either banana peppers or pickles so it's the best way if you like sloppy overfilled sandwiches. It's also the best way if the sandwich is small enough and the bread is thin enough to eat like a hot dog. Otherwise the bread should be completely separated.

The op pic sucks because it's made poorly. The toppings aren't evenly distributed so you're going to get bites of mostly meat or mostly veg. It would be fine if the toppings were layered like a normal sandwich and the bread was hollow enough to mostly enclose them.
