first time I ever went to a Red Robin was on a business trip. me and the cowoorkers were each given corporate cards with daily meal budget of $70 so we'd regularly eat at expensive restaurants every day and one day someone decided we all ought to go to a Red Robin and the shift from seeing a bunch of college age couples and groups of friends at the higher end restaurants to the families with two to three kids aged 5 to 15 or so in the Red Robin was a heartwarming reminder of my younger years.

For a short time Wendy's sold a "crispy dill chicken sandwich" which was their dollar menu chicken sandwich with a slice of cheese and a bunch of dill pickles. I don't really care that it was discontinued but I just thought it was interesting because I like to add a shitload of pickles to some fried chicken sandwiches (far more than were included in the limited time item) and that dollar menu sandwich from Wendy's is my favorite base for doing so. I don't buy it anymore because they want over $2 for it now and it's truly a shit tier piece of meat.

A little off-topic for this thread but not worth making a new one over.

How is the fresh ground beef QP McD's has introduced in the US market? Huge flavor difference in your opinion?

I'll drive down to Grand Forks or Fargo in a couple months to try one but was just curious.

also the last of the on menu specialty burgers
I tried it with one of those premium burgers, with onion straws and some different sauces
way to greasy. the bottom bun is always soaked so I just get big macs or double hamburgers
I would have thought canada would have been on board with that change from day one.
flavor difference was minimal
it's not touted anymore and I wouldn't be surprised if most places don't abide.

Oh shit that happened in 2019? I am a semi-regular /ck/ user so I'm surprised I missed it. Thought it was a 2022 or 2023 thing. Yeah no, Canada still uses the frozen patties - which are just fine. I'll still check it out next time I head down the QP with cheese is a nice classic unoffensive burger so I know it'll be a safe bet.

Thanks for taking the time for the write-up.

My contribution to this thread: the original Burger King chicken nuggets. They had the perfect spices and breading, and the meat was the same kind of processed junk that was delicious like the original chicken sandwich. Thank fuck they still sell that same as ever, or I'd never have a reason to return to that place.

I got into Taco Bell's fiesta veggie burrito just in time for it to be discontinued. I know I don't have the right to act all shocked and hurt since it's Taco Bell and razing their menu back to the stone age every few years is just what they do, but this was the only vegetarian offering I've ever had that actually felt like a complete meal. The only offering that didn't feel like meat was missing. Guess that's what I get for trying to expand my horizons.

the pretzel bacon cheeseburger from wendy's
from 2013 or 2014, this is not the pretzel pub or anything else wendy's has done with the pretzel burger since. this was their original experiment with it, and it was the best by such a wide margin it's unbelievable.
it had red onions instead of the usual white, some kind of fancy salad-mix type lettuce, a cheese that wasn't standard yellow american (but i don't recall what it was), and, the real kingmaker of the sandwich, this incredible honey mustard sauce. it's not the same kind that you can get as a dipping side for nuggets/fries.
this was so ridiculously good, everything they do something new and stupid with the pretzel bun, i really wish they would just bring this back.

It was such a good value, 1 dollar for a burrito with plenty of meat and carbs that's sure to fill you up for a while. Same thing with the beefy potato burrito which they also removed from their menu, but you can get that one custom since they still have the potatoes. The Fritos burrito you can't get at all anymore.

>shits too expensive for the modern day.
No it isn't, you've got that totally backwards. Fast food places actually used to use tallow because it's the cheapest option.
They switched away from tallow because of the nutritional "science" pushed by Crisco and other companies that said animal fat was worse for you than seed oils. They wouldn't have been able to use seed oils early on since tallow is cheaper, but since these fast food companies have gotten even bigger and bigger they can afford to fry in seed oils instead now.

The greatest of them all, the mythical Grande Soft Taco. It was a soft taco with double beef and no lettuce, wrapped in another soft taco with melted queso between the two layers. It was two dollars, I ate three of them every day after school and I don't regret a single bite.
It was so simple, so elegant, such a perfect blend of ingredients, a comfortable form factor and an excellent value. The day they discontinued it was the last day I ever went to a Taco Bell. I could've put multiple generations through college by now if they had kept making this simple item, but no, in their hubris they thought they could improve or innovate upon perfection. This
If you have a nearby wholesale butcher that actually breaks down carcasses (opposed to "butchers" that are just a deli counter that sell things from wholesale butchers) you can probably get tallow for free or for pennies because they usually throw it away to be incinerated as a waste product, same with beef bones. You will probably have to buy some meat from them first though and ask for tallow or bones and they'll probably throw it in for free.
The only negative thing is that rendering it takes a while and you have to keep skimming it. You only need a decent sized chunk as well, you get a surprisingly large amount of liquid tallow. A chunk of fat the size of a stick of butter is enough to shallow-fry 1kg of potatoes IME.
