Cilantro tastes great. It is very healthy too and helps the body chelate and detoxify heavy metals and other pollutants.

Dated a white girl once who had the cilantro tasting like soap meme. She also hated raw tomatoes and bell peppers and lettuce and removed it from her food.

Absolute retard baby behavior

"cilantro" is the american english word for "coriander" because it was unpopular in the US before mexican immigrants brought it up here again. We are more likely to use "coriander" as a reference to the seeds, which mexicans don't use generally, but has also been used intermittently in dishes here for a logn time - a holdover. Compare to "arugula" vs "rocket".

The soap gene is real, but more often than not picky eaters will adopt these *conditions* as a way of justifying their picky eating. It's the same shit that happened ~5 years ago when low carb meme came back into style and all of a sudden half the population developed celiac overnight. If you've ever worked in a restaurant you see this shit non-stop. You know they're lying because people will single out specific ingredients they're "allergic" to, but then when you (the cook) flags down the server and informs them that x,y, z ingredients in the same dish/app all fall into the same category of allergens, so would also probably give them a reaction, the server goes back to the table to ask them about those ingredients only to come back and say, "no, they're only allergic to tomatoes and blue cheese, but the cream and butter and french fries with the side of ketchup are all fine." It's so fucking retarded. Just be honest that you're a little baby with a widdle baby palate. It's exactly as stupid as people who order "no salt" fries at fast food and think it's some kind of hack, as though the entire kitchen isn't saying, "oh, another one of these asshole Karen types..."

Cilantro and coriander taste completely different, despite coming from the same plant. Does the soap gene make both of them taste like soap? That would be weird. Are they at least different brands of soap flavor? Or is it like a specific compound common to both which only they're able to detect and is so strong it overpowers their otherwise distinct flavors?

>> No.20055642

Something like 98% of people who claim cilantro tastes like soap don't even have the so called "cilantro soap gene". it's a meme invented by people with baby palates.

>> No.20056182

>>20055281
It's not a meme, it's a real thing. If I recall, geneticists have actually identified which genetic marker is responsible for it. Unsurprisingly, it's far less in common in cultures where it's commonly used as an ingredient, like South and Southeast Asia and Latin America.
