I live in one of the larger cities in America (within the top 75 by population). I live about 8 miles from the downtown city center--where the high rise buildings and sports stadiums are. I have a sidewalk in front of my house that connects to the other streets in my residential area. But the sidewalks don't actually connect to any of the stores or anything that I'd need to go to. I could get to a drug store, a cafe, a yoga studio, and an insurance agency. But beyond that, everything else kind of requires a vehicle to get to. Otherwise I'd be walking through random patches of grass, ditches, and parking lots. The roads are narrow, have little to no shoulders, and people drive like crazy people.

Most of America is inaccessible by anything other than a motorized vehicle. I'm not sure that there is even any public transportation available within a reasonable distance of me, other than getting a taxi/Uber. Which idk if that even counts as public transportation.

I was paid by the day. Sometimes it was a little over minimum wage. Often it was under, like when I was working for 12 hours a day. I didn't get tipped because most people don't believe in tipping day laborers even though day laborers do far more for society than a pizza guy. I did switch to a more reliable retail job. Also minimum wage. The only tip I ever got was when a guy bought out all of the imported polish beers and gave me one. It was a good beer.
