They are mid water and surface feeders. They primarily eat algae. In farms they're usuallly given poultry feeds, which also promotes algae growth. They're also an African, not an Asian, group of fish. They're invaluable for small scale private aquaponics in warmer climates.

They’re good in that even frozen they don’t get that fishy smell easily, although if you can get fresh there are a lot better options in terms of taste and texture imo. They’re great for steaming and other dishes where you don’t want a white fish with a strong flavour.

It depends on the methods used to raise them. On a small scale setup where they're not overcrowded, given a high quality chicken feed, regular partial water changes (it can't be continually filtered as that will remove algal blooms they depend on for the majority of their diet) along with proper temperatures to promote a sane rate of growth to adulthood they are an excellent food source. If you raise a million of them in a giant tropical mud pit and feed them cheap poultry mix loaded with growth hormones they will taste bad and may contain dangerous levels of various chemicals. They are like chickens, best case scenario is to raise them yourself.

Never understood the bottom feeder thing. The stuff on the bottom of a lake is seaweed and mussels, they aren't eating dirt. The stuff on top of the lake is bugs and duck cocks. It's like saying cows are bottom feeders because they eat grass. If a fish tastes dirty that's usually because of how it was processed.
