Have you had a beloved local restaurant that recently went under?

We had a deli here that made some of the biggest and best sandwiches in the state, and it recently closed. To be fair it was off the beaten path, and I don't know how a place like that works economically these days. But I'm still devastated.

Not recent, but there's still the remains of a small downtown sandwich shop that had huge portions at decent prices. It shut down over 6 years ago and the dilapidated sign still stands. OPs image reminded me of their philly, it was ridiculously good but insanely salty. I miss it.

Now it's just a place for taggers and vandalism.

It wasnt really a fantastic place but covid killed the last bar in my extremely small rust belt town, and it had been walking distance from my house. They also served food and now the closest place to get food is 15 miles away. Now the bar is an empty building and they knocked down the building opposite to ostensibly make apartments exclusively for meth addicts.

I had a kebab place that served a iskander, which was a mass of white sauce, unleavened bread and kebab meat. It felt both good dirty and good to eat and shockingly filling.

Sadly as soon as I saw the "need waiters" sign I realized that the writing was already on the wall.

Also, it did not go under, but I went to one place that served top notch hamburgers and sandwiches for pennies. But then, happened what usually happens, the place started to have success, raised the prices, turned into a franchise and changed the menu and ingredients for something more industrial and palatable to everyone, turning into basically slop.

If I ever feel the need for that I would go to mcdonalds/burguer king thank you very much. Still it feels like I a captured an image of the past in my mind, of a time when that place was worthwhile and it will never come back.

Any Michiganders remember freeway fritz? it was right off of I-75. I dont remember much about it other than my family would always stop there when we went to the northern part of the state. Unfortunately they closed soon after the '08 economy crash. You can still get the chicken at the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth obviously, but being able to stop on a trip was always nice.

Well hot damn, another 508 native. I moved away over a decade ago but still go to Hot Dog Annie's every time I go home to visit family; lots of nostalgia at that place and Coney Island down on Southbridge St.
There were three places nearby that have all closed since I moved away, and it hurts a little every time I'm back there and can't go anymore. Widoff's Bakery and Weintraub's Deli used to be across from each other on Water St, and Maury's Deli was on Main St down near Webster Square. These days when I visit my mother I've got no idea where to get good bulkies, corned beef, or pastrami anymore.

Man I miss Widoff's and Weintraub's. Used to always go there as a kid. Giovanni's oh Hope Ave is really good (bakery and now also deli) but it doesn't have that old time immigrant deli feel you want. And no big jars of pickled cow's tongues for that authentic touch.

Just be warned that Giovanni's is an Italian bakery so they tend to focus on Italian cookies and cakes and salami and such. Not an old world Polska or Jewish deli like Water Street.

When I was in college there was a hotdog/brat restaurant across the street from campus that I would go to at least once a week. They had really good hotdogs with a huge topping bar and would make these spiraled deep fried potatoes covered with salt and pepper and parmesan cheese, shit was addicting. They also had a hotdog cart that would go to frat row on party nights.
Then for some reason the owners decided to switch it to a donut shop. There were already 3 other donut shops in town but I guess they needed another one. I'm sure it's a lot more profitable but goddamn was that a big loss, donuts are shit in comparison.

In my hometown, we had an absolutely wonderful BBQ and pizza place right nearby the high school. The guy who owned it and his wife put so much work into making delicious BBQ, super good and unique pizzas, and creating a comfy blues vibe with a gorgeous interior, a nice patio, and consistent live music.
They lasted probably 15 or so years, eventually the high school changed their policies so that all the kids had lunch at the same time, the owner got sick of dealing with the lunch rush every day for a single hour, he wasn't even capable of serving everyone, and he decided to shut down and go start a farm to grow and make his own pizza dough out in the country.
I wish them the absolute best of luck and will always remember how much their food impacted me, it was the first place I really got to liking BBQ and the first place I went to hear live music while I ate. But it's fucking bullshit that that school can just decide they're going to fuck over all the local businesses for god knows what reason.

here in Allston, MA we had the perfect cash only hole in the wall diner called "Steve's Kitchen." was like $8 for a 3 stack of 11" diameter pancakes, always had a bunch of blue collar guys like myself for breakfast at 5am-6am. Steve retired and sold the restaurant to some chinks who turned it into "Cafe Weekend." went once after it changed hands and it was the worst meal I've had for 3x the price of the same order at Steve's. they even had the gall to list "fresh squeezed orange juice" on the menu and serve me a cup of what was clearly tropicana.
Allston as a whole is getting taken over by all the rich chinks who come to Boston University on their patents' dime. time to move to Worcester I guess

this is what i came here to post. there was a szechuan style chinese restaurant that i grew up eating at for two decades. they closed 8-10ish years ago and no other place compares. i would kek at the feminine male waiters chink accent, order szechuan chicken, subgum pan fried noodles with chicken, hot and sour soup was free with lunch, and almond jello for desert was also free.

Two places come to mind, one was a American Chinese style place run by a super nice Korean lady and her husband. The food was the best American style Chinese food I have ever had. Unfortunately she got sick and passed from cancer so the family closed the restaurant. The other was a dive bar that served budweiser in frosted mugs for a $1. Was a great place to spend a weekday afternoon getting drunk on the cheap at. Owner was bad with money and ended up selling the place. Became a faggy hipster barcade with faggy woke assholes. Then state bought the property to run high speed rail line that is nothing but a way for corrupt democrats to launder tax money back into their pockets. At least its not a faggy barcade anymore

Too many to count, I can't even remember most of them just vague memories of great little joints that disappeared when the economy went to shit over the decades. The most recent one was a mexican place that took over a freddies. I only ate their once right after they opened, the prices were insanely low and the portions were enormous. Everything was fresh and delicious. Went back 6 months later and it was boarded up. I guess they were too generous. I rarely try new places anymore because I know they will just disappear for a new chic fil a or a mcdonalds.

Yes. There was this little buffet near my work that was cheap and did salad plus a hot dish, had ice cream and a dessert too. Fucking awesome place, loved to pop into them for lunch, there was no way in hell I was beating the value & quality on my own. Died from COVID shutdowns. I miss them. Place even had outdoor seating with a waterfront view. Supposedly the building does child care or some shit now.
