Is a wok worth buying or are pans enough?

>> No.19908585

Unless you're making stir fry all the time it isn't worth it. It'll just take up space and it's useless for other shit

If you buy a wok the encroachment is complete.

Get a fucking skillet and get on with your life.

if you only need a skillet, you don't need the volume. if you only need a saucepan type for the volume, you don't need the weird shape. but it's a great all in one and it's fun to have carbon steel. the most important pro is that the base fits the size of the typical stove burner, which is a neglected factor when using a wide pan. that's the main advantage, everything else is nonsense.
it's heavy but the volume also means you don't have to do tossing nonsense, just stirring is fine.

you can use pan to do wok food and vice versa, but preferably with a large pan
teflon pans won't stand the heating though

>had a phase where I was stir frying rice 2-3 times a week
>decide to get a wok
>proceed to fall into a Dutch oven phase
>then a curry phase
>etc etc
>been nearly a year and I haven’t even seasoned my wok
it does take up a ton of space too

what's the point of a wok in the first place? just tilt the pan if you want things to submerge in oil

>> No.19908759

May dad gave me an expensive wok when I moved out for the first time as a teenager. Together with a toolbox and a quality flashlight. He got all sentimental and shit and said any man should at least own these three things. The guy was a drunkard so, take his words with a grain of salt. I miss him.

woks are best used over a huge flame where the sides of the pan get hot as well and help to develop a slight char and caramelization caused by rapid exposure to high heat surfaces

you need more than a gas stove, you need one with juice or get used to making child sized portions, you aren’t looking to steam and boil

>> No.19911067

Also, don’t use soap on it, just water and a nice, rough cheap paper towel to wash it
