19904912 No.19904912 [Reply] [Original]

The Nativity Fast starts today for the Orthobros, no meat, no dairy, no eggs, and on certain days no oil, wine or fish until Christmas. Please post recipes that meet these criteria.

I made a vegetable biryami once when I was doing the Daniel Diet. It's an Indian dish which is basically rice and vegetables. Some recipes may call for yogurt or other dairy products but you can just opt out of them

Obviously these obscure rules were not invented by man. They clearly show evidence of a divine hand..

Is it really that time already? Shit.
My Gran did all the fasts and blah blah blah but I've never.
Also, for recipes, bisques can be nice, even if you swap margarine for butter. My grandmother considered that cheating since it invalidates the spirit of the fast if you just look for loopholes. It's a time to contemplate Christ, she used to say, and looking for loopholes implies you're more fixated on the world than the spirit

Most borscht has meat or dairy or eggs, sometimes more than one of those two.

Going to have some steamed mussels tonight. I keep to the fasting rules pretty strictly, but I lean heavily on shellfish and shrimp for protein, which sort of feels like cheating because they're so tasty. At least I live on the coast so seafood is easy to get. The Nativity Fast has a lot of fish days which doesn't even feel like fasting. Will probably make a big batch of carrot/lentil soup next week. If anyone has good lentil recipes, please share

that basically ruins thanksgiving...

Personally I'll not be fasting, but let's see... No oil?? So no peanut butter...

no eggs... so basically all baked good are out of the question...

no meat, so you'll need protein...fish... no fish sometimes...Shellfish isn't fish, but then, fish is meat... Bit backwards, this rule... fish and meat are the same thing. If shellfish is allowed then I'd be having lots of oysters. obviously oysters is meat as well...

Salads? Corn on the cob would be annoying without butter, but.. oh well.

salad dressing of vinegar and... not oil... hmm...

Damn... You know what? Fuck it.

Someone go buy a fuckton of Guiness. Its a beer fast.

Oh, I can manage it just fine... you're looking at a diet of fruit and vegetables.

You can't have avocados or nuts, though because they're packed full of oils, so I already hate the diet/fast. Basically anything with any flavor goes out the window next... leaving you with steamed veggies and fruits. Going into the winter times, this fast traditionally would be... what, we're just eating potatoes and no gravy for the next month? Maybe you had a bit of dried fruit stored. That would absolutely suck. No thank you.

You will connect with your fellow man, and possibly God
I did a Black Fast once, you're only supposed to do them once or twice in your life
You give up food for Lent
You are allowed salt, vinegar, and one cup of cooked grains Monday through Saturday
It's not possible to stock up on a weeks' calories on Sunday even though you are allowed three regular meals, and besides, your stomach shrinks, and you can't eat much anyway
