You've obviously never worked in a kitchen. 90% of it is just repetition. You come in, there's a big ass prep list, you've made everything so many times you know all the recipes by heart. You bring a bin to the walk-in and just start loading it up with ingredients for 4 or 5 different things you can do all at once, and get to work. It's not fun. The guy who's standing next to you stands next to you for 9 hours a day. There's usually not much to talk about. You know all his stories and have heard all his jokes. You also know that you need to get most of that shit done an hour before service so you can work on your station and feel somewhat ready for the inevitable ass-kicking. Having music playing makes a HUGE difference.

That's literally what it's like in a kitchen, though. You're always short staffed, you always have to do more than what's in your job description, and the only guy you want working X station is the guy who works it every Friday and Saturday. If one person calls out it's typically going to be a nightmare for everybody.
