Order a chicken tenders meal anywhere in the US and you will undoubtedly get two of these. Why? They're not for making a sandwich, there's not enough bread. They aren't for dipping in sauce or gravy because it tastes terrible. They're just two bland slices of fried bread from the grocery store. Are they a punishment for ordering tenders? Please explain this phenomenon to me. At this point in life I have tossed a hundred loaves' worth of Texas toast.

The reason we have twenty different chicken finger chains with the same presentation is Guthrie's. Guthrie's was the original chicken finger restaurant in Auburn, Alabama. Students and alumni from other colleges came to football games at Auburn University, ate at Guthrie's, and liked it enough to copy the concept in their own college towns.
If you look at the headquarters or first restaurant locations of other chicken finger chains, they are all in SEC or other Southern college towns. Zaxby's is from Athens, Georgia. Raising Cane's is from Baton Rouge, Louisiana (this one doesn't quite count as was opened late enough for one of the founders to have worked at a Guthrie's location). There are plenty of smaller restaurants you may not have heard of as well. Slim Chickens in Fayetteville, Arkansas; McDougal's in Nashville and Sawyer's in Knoxville, Tennessee; Foosackly's in Mobile (was originally also in Baton Rouge); Huey Magoo's in Orlando, Florida. There are plenty of others.
In any case, you can probably guess what they originally served with their chicken fingers at Guthrie's.

Toast is for sopping up wet/saucy food and toasting the bread adds texture. It's obviously better with butter/lard but after a long enough period of NOT spreading a fat (partially because my climate is cold enough that butter is only spreadable in the mid to late-spring/summer) I don't really miss it anymore.
