has anyone tried one of those wireless BBQ thermometers? is it worth to spend almost 100 bucks on something like that? My major doubt is that the probe is pretty thick compared to a normal kitchen thermometer. Is that an issue?

of course you can check the temperature with a cheap kitchen thermometer, but something like this is much more convenient
>constant temperature control instead of having to remove the meat from the heat to poke it with a probe multiple times
>internal and external temperature at the same time
>alarm once it reaches the desired temperature
>estimated cooking time prediction, so you can adjust the temperature if you're too late or too early (don't know how accurate it is, but it's a potentially cool feature)

The one I got for my sister as she smokes briskets and pork bellies all the time came with its own digital display. So I don't have to worry about an app shutting down, cuz the thing doesn't have that. It just communicates either bluetooth to the display or via home network to the display/phone/computer as it does have that capability as well. However the display will never not work. Great for when she starts up a smoker at 11pm and needs to go and wrap it at like 4am or refill the pellets. The meat tells her when to get up, instead of guessing by alarm clock.

Eyes: The colour of the preparation changes. It's ready. Or the colour of the released juices changes. Means it's ready.
Nose: the perfume of the preparation changes. It's ready.
Ears: the sound the preparation makes in the pan changes. Means it's ready.

You would think so, until you realize these two things:
A) most are cheap Chinese junk that don't read temperature properly
B) most use Bluetooth to transmit data to your phone, so you have to stay within about 20 feet (or so) of the device for it to work
C) once you leave range of the device, like go inside, no app will make any audible indication of this so 9 time out of 10 you won't even know it's out of range until you wonder how your meat is doing and you walk outside and it reconnects and your app chimes telling you that your meat is now 40 degrees overcooked
