19759942 No.19759942 [Reply] [Original]

God this shit is nasty. Tastes like fucking tequila or something and makes me feel ill after drinking it, just like tequila does. I normally drink bourbon/rye and wanted to branch out into other whiskeys but this has seriously spooked me. Is it worth trying other Irish whiskies or Scotch? I was able to get just a small bottle of Jameson to try it but if I want to try Scotch I'll have to shell out for a full bottle.

Also whiskey thread.

"must" as in "a must"

hard to find actual dustys these days it seems. oldest dusty I've found so far was a bottle of McCarthy's bottled in Feb. 2013 that I bought in Jan. 2021.

make sure to tip the bottle and shake it hard once or twice to help the cork unsettle before removing it.

I also suggest being very gentle when uncorking because theres always the possibility of it degrading or rotting but especially when it's been sitting. I always twist more than pull when uncorking whether it's been opened or not because it's less stressful on the cork itself and will keep it as intake as possible unless theres a defect with the bottle.

if you notice once you uncork it that theres bits of cork around the inside of the neck then wipe it out and let the cork sit out and dry for an hour or two before putting it back in. also it doesn't hurt to let the bottle breathe a bit, especially with heavily peated stuff.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I read it about 15 minutes after I opened the bottle. I didn't tip or shake the bottle but I was gentle when uncorking it and I didn't notice any cork residue on the bottle or any visible degradation of the cork.

Also I found the bottling date, which was September 2011 (!)

My reaction to the taste so far is pic related. It is definitely not bad or disgusting or anything like that, but unlike anything else I've drank before and I need to process it. If I end up liking it the same store had two other bottles of similar age.

For me the sure way of knowing I was a Laphroaig > Ardbeg type was putting them side by side.

I'd say if you end up liking it to keep one and try to sell the other to a whisky club. As long as you have the receipt to prove the price you paid they shouldn't have a problem giving you at least double the cost. Problem there being they will probably clean out the spot of any other finds like that.

Yeah it's the Laphroaig 10. Thanks for the help, anon. I think I may need a few glasses to really figure this one out. I was expecting it to taste unique but this still defied what I was expecting.

Somewhat funny story: I tried two liquor stores actually. The first one had no way to check stock online but it was a nicer store so I figured they might have it. I didn't see it and had to ask the clerk (a woman). She didn't know what it was and asked me to spell it for her so she could look it up. She asked another (female) clerk in the back and I heard her say "I guess that's how it's pronounced???" They told me they had it in the store once in 2016 and would mark it down to get more.

Drinking alone is legitimately way better than drinking around other people, with few exceptions. The point of drinking is to Let Loose and have a good time, if other people are around you're always checking your behavior and acting in a controlled manner. You gotta wait on the bartender for your drinks, you don't control the music or tv, etc. If by a miracle you're in a social situation where everyone matches your vibe perfectly it's fantastic, but this is exceedingly rare.

Jameson lingers. I think it's the oak or the amount of time spent on it. It does kind of remind me of mid-level reposado.

Scotch is smoky, and not in the same way smoked food is. Peat smoked barley can take on tastes and aromas like tire-fire and fatal-car-crash (you know the smell) - which can work if it's a decent scotch or if you know you kind of enjoy it, but I wouldn't dive headfirst into a bottle of Laphroaig, maybe Walker red or black instead.

You might find that you prefer American whiskey.

PROTIP: Most Irish whiskeys are very light and floral/grassy. They do not have nearly the same character as rye or bourbon, which are very strong, spicy, and forward. Irish whiskey is more soft and subtle. That being said, try this one.

Irish whiskey fills its own niche. Bourbons tend to be very woody, brown-sugary, and cinnomony, rye tends to be very spicy and with notes of black pepper, clove, and nutmeg. Scotch on the other hand tends to be very citrusy with vanilla, and either comes smooth or smokey/briney. Irish on the other hand is typically very dry, and it comes off as being creamy or herbal, with sweet notes ranging from apple to honey to a light vanilla.

I will say I generally prefer bourbon, but my favorite Whiskey of all time is Red Breast 12. You WILL love it. Trust me. Only problem is it can be a bit pricey depending on where you buy it.

a lot of the characteristics you mention come directly from the distillation process, in particular the amount of times distilled. Bourbon/Rye are distilled once and mostly through Coffey stills. This leaves the end product taste cheap to many.

Scotch/Irish are distilled 2 and 3 times(depending on the distillery) and for single malts a copper pot still is used. Which makes the base profile of the distillate much more enveloping and any "ensmoothening" processes from the barrel are multiplied due to more refined product being used from the start as well as longer fermentations, slower distillation, cooler climate and less fresh oak.

>>19768113

Jameson is okay if you are trying not to go too expensive, but if you are able to afford it, go for something better once you have a little bit of taste for Scotch.

I like Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Caol Ila, Glenfarclas, Glennfiddich, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Oban, Talisker. Those are all single malt Scotch whiskeys.

If you just want to knock yourself out, Jameson will do, but if you want to learn the ins and outs of whiskey, you should sort of expand your taste. Usually, if you really like the 12 y/o version of a Scotch, the higher price for an older one is well worth your money.

There's a remarkable variety of taste profiles to be found in Scotch. Something unpeated and sherry cask aged like a Glendronach will taste COMPLETELY different to Laphroaig. No resemblance at all. And something unpeated and bourbon barrel aged will taste completely different to either of those.

Laphroaig isnt my idea of a daily drinker or even weekly drinker.

definitely branch out and explore as much as possible to try and find your bliss point.

once you get a few dozen bottles under your belt or even just a handful of exceptional ones, you'll know the expense is worth it. plus, your opened bottles will slowly change as well as your taste.

you can still find some seriously good scotch (84+/100) under $60 after tax with a little luck.

part of it is also tempering your expectations a bit, because to a degree scotch does have lots of similarities across the board, so it's also suggested to get some decent rum, brandy, rye to build your palate.

doing random side by side testings to draw comparisons will show you the differences more overtly. have a neutral palate cleanser handy.

The main problem with Jameson is the smell. It has a very sharp cheap whisky smell to it. The taste is not that bad for the price, but it isn't great and combined with the smell it can really give you the idea that you are drinking cheap crap.

Scotch whisky is much different from Irish though. Don't let this 1 bad experience with Irish whisky let you think you don't like real whisky. Just get something speyside or highland region. These are generally going to be nice and beginner friendly. But do be careful that some of the famous brands now also produce cheap whiskies with no age on it, which could be a little disappointing (like the glenlivet founders reserve). Another good recommendation would be a Johnnie Walker black label. A lot of wannabe whisky experts are going to hate on it, because "omg it's commercial and it's not a single malt!", but as a whisky lover myself, I honestly think black label is a pretty good whisky for the price, and being a blend, its a very good 'average' scotch whisky for someone who is new to it.

For example, Four Roses is a bourbon in roughly the same price category as Jameson is, and it's a really smooth drink that I as a whisky snob can enjoy to sip on by itself.
