Bourbon personally, but a good scotch is nice sometimes. Though I normally like the mellowness of an Irish whiskey instead. Trouble with all of them is their flavor is mostly derived from the weird aromatic compounds in charred wood and I figure long term I'm going to get stomach cancer or something from that. Fuck me I guess.

No thanks, for me, it’s whiskey

Really good scotch is better than really good scotch, but even the worst bourbon is still pretty OK, whereas bad scotch is offensive.

Rye is everything bourbon wishes it could be. Bourbon tastes like you boiled an old boot and threw a bunch of sugar in it.

Not really, despite Rye whisky being distilled first Bourbon quickly became preferred as its more mild and sweat flavor as opposed to more intense harsher flavors of Rye. Point being much like what IPA's do for beer with their hoppes Rye whisky is usually a distinctly more overpowering spirit in comparison to Bourbon.

I like bourbon and I don't like scotch. That said, they're practically different drinks. You can't compare the two any more than you can compare brandy to vodka, for example.

If you're worried about this, you should be more worried about the alcohol content than the trace amounts of byproducts from the charred wood.

Scotch allows for more variety than burbon or rye because it allows using used barrels that can provide flavor from the previous content. You also typically age scotch longer than burbon/rye because scotch is less at risk of being over-oaked. Plus scotch is aged at a lower temperature so it doesn't evaporate as fast. Scotch is usually made with pot stills while burbon/rye is made in column stills. All of this adds up to scotch usually being more diverse and having more of a complex flavor profile, while burbon and rye is cleaner and more direct.

You're not wrong, but my body is naturally able to process alcohol as long as I'm not binge drinking. Oddball cyclic organic molecules are something else entirely, and can be directly carcinogenic. I actually looked into it and there have been some studies done on this and the conclusion was that while present the levels are typically very low. So yeah, too much alcohol is probably the bigger concern.

They're made from different ingredients and have different flavors. It's like saying roast beef is the same as roast pork because they're both roasted.

Never had scotch, only ever had one bourbon (which was maker's mark)
Makers mark was kind of sweet, kind of dry and smokey, I couldn't give you a fair answer.
