No. The two bread slices instead of a burger bun is why this is more like a grilled cheese than a burger.

Patty melt is a specialty burger before it's a specialty grilled cheese. Nice try though.

I think you can dismiss this on the technicality that you couldn't possibly fully cook the burger within the bread. A grilled cheese is made simply with a single pan. The cheese is melted inside without direct contact to the heating surface. This disqualifies the patty melt from inclusion in the pantheon of grilled cheese sandwiches.

The patty melt is a celebrated burger especially with sauteed mushrooms and onions

is a sloppy joe a sandwich or a burger? if its a sandwich then so is a patty melt. if it's a burger then patties don't matter just ingredients, in which case the patty melt is more grilled cheese than burger

I'm open minded and consider any sandwich with pan grilled bred and a melted slice of american cheese to be a grilled cheese. Those meme grilled cheese sandwiches with all the different kinds of cheese are a straight up JOKE though.

Okay...
>heat up pan
>cook beef patty on it
>pour off grease
>place patty and cheese between buttered bread
>use the same pan to brown the bread and melt the cheese
Now what?

Maybe...I can't speak for him, but Burgers are sandwiches anyway.
The original Earl of Samdwich just put roasted meat on bread so he could gamble.
While there may be a difference between a Mushroom Swiss burger, and the same thing served on toast, the really aren't to different--
You'd have to redefine it every time you switched bread delivery systems.

Cheap shitty ingredients make cheap shitty foods.
1 and 1+ Michelin star are different, as are many dedicated restaurants that only use local or high quality ingredients, but I worked in restaurants until I started to hate to cook... Then got out.
I can make any kind of food I want. That said, I'm really not interested in the "haute Cuisine" fads, just classic, quality foods.

haven't had a good patty melt but they seem awesome in concept. nothing has reached my expectations of a good burger, good cheese, good bread, and an acceptable amount of grease.
also if there's meat on a cheese sandwich it's not a grilled cheese. meat is a main ingredient, cheese is secondary, vegetables are tertiary. if you ever ate a bread and butter sandwich, that was ...some sort of unimaginable fourth-quaduary sandwich
