I have a cheap one. It comes out consistently and easily without having to watch it at all. It's fool-proof perfect rice every single time. You can probably do it just fine at home if you find the magic dial on your stove for the exact heat using the exact same pot with trial and error, but why the fuck would you want to?

A rice cooker's rice is always, always perfect, even if you slightly fuck up the measurements.

It cooks rice perfectly every time and has a keep warm function. The super fancy ones are overblown, but a normal rice cooker of decent quality is only about $50 and you have to be retarded to fuck it up. >> No.19692548

>>19692526
People who have never used a fuzzy logic rice cooker think that the rice they cook on the stove is already "perfect", so of course they'd think cheap rice cooker rice is just as good. Most people have the attitude of "rice is rice", and don't realize how much better it can be. The first time I brought my Zoj over to my parents' house and offered to cook the rice (the exact same rice my mom has been cooking on the stove for 50 years) her mind was blown. She couldn't believe that the exact same rice with nothing added could have so much more flavor and even a better texture. People tend to be resistant to change, but when they actually try something that is objectively better they will typically concede they were wrong.

The catch is that it takes TEN years to master the technique (not really). A lot of people who don't really cook think cooking is easy, and is just about following a recipe or copying a set of steps, as though it's a science experiment in a controlled setting. I remember the first time I was working with a professional baker I watched them kneading dough and everything I thought I knew went out the window. It looked like they were just randomly rolling their first around, but they knew exactly what they were doing by feel, and their bread was completely different than mine when I tried to follow exactly what they did. It's like that scene in Initial D when the guy thinks he'll just watch what the main character does differently and copy his technique, and then he can't tell that he's doing anything special.

Not true. A power surge can quickly melt and alight your average countertop appliance. It doesn't matter if its own circuit is inert, the weak wiring between the outlet to the circuit are still connected to the grid. It seems trivial now, but a few decades ago power surges were a reasonably expected occurrence, people's whole houses used to burn down. Now it's different because the grid is more stable, we have the circuit breakers, we also have intermediate power bars that automatically turn off in a wattage exceedance, AND many of our appliances have their own failsafes. But people who grew up in the past can't see all the different protections we now have, so they still worry about these things.

I've never fucked it up from not paying attention, even if I inadvertently let it boil too long it makes no difference, boiling off way too much water is the only way you could fuck it up. Rice cooker rice isn't much more idiot-proof at all. 1. Pressurized rice cookers cook rice faster & fluffier, conveniently without failure, compared to a regular pot & stove setup.
2. They keep rice warm at a constant temperature throughout the day (reheated rice become hard and go stale quicker).

Obviously, if you don't eat rice almost every meal you wouldn't need one. But having one makes one's life easier if one does.
