honestly front of the house is a weird animal. most people in the kitchen lack the chill and social skills to ne good at it. people like to demean servers but the job is seriously not for everyone. the people who are good at it make it look easy but there is kind of a knack to it.

FoH is also often kind of a lifestyle. sure. it doest half to be. you could work your shift, save your money, amd act like a normal person outside of work. what so often happens though is people get sucked in. it's a weird combination or fast but unreliable cash, seemingly short hours, and weird schedules that mean your night off is a fucking Tuesday and the only people that want to hang out or other restrauntfags. servers make decent cash, but since it's cash in hand nightly it devolves into this easy come easy go kind of thing. the day it day and inconsistent nature lends it's self to fuzzy tracing math. servers love to tell you how they "make 300 bucks I'm 4 hours" when in reality it's more like 270 dollars in 5 hours. and only Friday/sat. amd their weeknights are much less productive so they really only make about 700 a week. and since they spend 50 bucks at the bar every night they barely can cover rent. the number of servers who make 50 bucks an hour cash and can't afford to fix a flat tire always shocked me.

about half of then I worked with fit into this basic formula

> get seduced by your peers seemingly living a never ending summer vacation lifestyle with little work and lots of partying
> be a little bad at math to not realize the trouble your in
> eventually get in money trouble because in reality you make about as much as a gas station clerk

This leads service industry people to only socialize with other service industry workers giving them a very misinformed view on working conditions and pay. It creates a cyclical system where servers, bartenders, cooks etc. only hear about new positions in the industry itself, only compare their working hours, pay and conditions to other service industry people with similarly shitty situations etc. and all this leads them to living an incredibly shitty and unhealthy lifestyle without realizing how easy it is to just quit. They would get paid better stocking shelves at Walmart like that other anon said but never realize this because they never socialize with anyone who isn't in the same industry.

When I was working in a bar we had one girl who did this. We split tips evenly and she would go home immediately after a shift and never drank, smoked cigarettes, only went out with other staff once in a blue moon. One day she told us that over the past few months she had saved about 500 euro in cash from just the tips while everyone else immediately wasted their at the end of the shift on booze or junk food.
