19678176 No.19678176 [Reply] [Original]

I want to do a full strip and reseason. I know how to season so that's not the issue. It's cleaning the 1/8" thick whatever the fuck is on the outside that's the issue. I've used oven cleaner on CS in the past with decent results, but this is really thick caked on shit. Could possibly be a quite old pan that was used on a wood burning stove so I'm thinking it might be some sort of creosote build up. Pan is a #5 8" BSR skillet. Got it at an estate sale for a couple of bucks from a time capsule of a house. Had to dig through the cabinets and found it. Any tips or methods of cleaning?

I would just try the oven cleaner, might need a couple rounds. Or get one of those metal brush attachments for a power drill and go to town on it

Looks bent. Is the bottom flat?
Grinder with flap disk and wire wheel.
Or find a machine shop and ask them to sand blast it for like 20 bucks

just look at it wrong in the vicinity of some dish soap and it will strip it down to bare metal

Yellow cap Easy Off oven cleaner, I've used it to clean such build up off several pans. DO NOT listen to the retard that said to use a wire wheel or any other bad advice he offered. As stated by the other anon, it will need more than one round. I usually put mine in a trash bag and spray it.

Not bent. It is flat and not warped. The bend in the pic is the pour spout lip. I'll give it a few rounds with the oven cleaner then. Never had one this caked with shit.

Retard?
Wire wheel is the quickest way to remove that shit to bare metal without scaring the iron. Are you fucking retarded? Flap disk also works excellent on cast iron

That's why I thought it might be creosote. It's an old Birminham Stove and Range skillet #5 size. Supposedly the makers of wood cooking stoves also made pans designed to fit the eyes on the range. So, since the pan is marked only as a 5 size it means it was made when cooking on a wood fired range was more common than today. Later BSR pans starting in the 60s had inch sizes stamped on the bottom because fewer people were using wood stoves. The inside of the pan is relatively clean and smooth.

Buy a buck-boost DC power supply (~$15), strip the leads off an old laptop charger (free) and connect to the DC supply. Set up the supply for 12V at 5A, then turn it off. Buy washing soda (~$2 for more than you'll ever need). Put washing soda in water (0.1 cup per gallon). Put water in plastic tub that will comfortably hold your pan suspended and submerged. Attach the positive terminal to a chunk of iron/steel (also free, I hope) and put it in the tub. Suspend the pan in the middle of the tank on a string/cord (length of PVC across the tub with the string around the middle should work) and connect the negative terminal to the pan. Turn on the mains supply. Turn on the DC supply. You are now electrolytically stripping the pan. Turn off the power after an hour and take the pan out to wipe off any loose crud. Keep doing this until you are down to bare metal. The pan will _instantly_ start to rust every time you wipe it down, because it will be bare, unreacted iron. Once it's clean, oil and start seasoning as soon as it is dry.

Brake cleaner, black trashbag, spray it and let it soak up some rays from the sun, come back in a few hours
If it doesn't scrub off, do it again

Unironically use a weber grill or fire pit and throw that shit in. Pour bacon grease or whatever inside of it and throw it over a good sized fire, pan bottom down. It'll burn out most of that until it's white and dusty. From there it's just your normal paper towel/ oil wipe down. Throw that shit on the stove on medium heat after and it'll be so "thirsty" for that oil your pan will be shiny in 20 minutes. Just did last week.

And here it is after a couple uses today. The white you're seeing is oil reflecting off the sun, not ash. I made Salisbury steak in it the other night and the sauce just wiped out. If you enjoy living I would steer clear from the brake cleaner idea. That shit is one of the most toxic substances known to man. Great at cleaning grease though.

It looks like just massively caked on whateveritis. I'll give it a shot this weekend and post before and afters with the other pan I found at the house. The other one is a Wagner 1891 which, while not vintage, is still USA made, not warped, and a nice pan especially for just a couple of bucks.
