i remember seeing onigiri in japanese cartoons as a kid and desperately wanting to try it to fulfill my weeb fantasies. which brings me to the question, why is onigiri so prevalent in anime? i swear every anime where onigiri is setting-appropriate has a character eating onigiri in it at some point

i was born in japan in the mid 90s and watched the early epsiodes of pokemon there before coming to america
i remember seeing this scene with my preschool comprehension and limited english knowledge and telling my mom so proudly that onigiri is called a doughnut just like the cake
she believed me because she also didnt speak english. only my dad did and he never corrected us.
she might still believe it to this day...

Because its super common in japan.
Easy as fuck to make, can pack them for lunch, can make them in bulk for the family.

And theyre not messy cause the rice is short grained which makes it really sticky

A fresh donut is out of this world, you have to find a non-commercial place because they should be silky soft and fried. I've never had a non-commercial bagel but apparently this is the cases here too, and they shouldn't be hard, and can't really compare to what most people eat.
