Have you ever eaten a burger at a backyard barbecue that didn't taste horrible? I genuinely cannot think of a single time I had a burger at a grilling event that was good.
Why do people grill burgers when they always suck like this?

How are you or your cohorts grilling your burgers? What seasoning? Doneness? Frozen or fresh? Any additives like onions or bacon in the meat?
I've had some shit grilled burgers but its not hard to make a good one. Or are you just being a stick in the mud snob?

>Have you ever eaten a burger at a backyard barbecue that didn't taste horrible?
Yes, because I cooked them. Most people don't know that you need to make a depression in the middle of the patty like pic related so as the meat shrinks while it cooks it will have an even thickness being done all the way through sooner. The average person just makes the patties an even thickness from the start, and once it starts to contract getting thicker in the middle it takes longer for the center to cook so they press it with the spatula squeezing out all the juices making the burger dry.

Burgers are generally not great for grilling. I grill all the time and I don't know why they became the go-to. The meat is minced so all of the fat and juice leak out as soon as they get hot. Sausages, chicken, steak, etc, are all way better on the grill.

It's because 90% of the time the guy grilling doesn't know anything about cooking, but thinks the grill is a "man's job", so everyone ends up with overcooked hockey pucks. The grill is easily the best way to cook burgers if you have any clue what you're doing, but you've lost the plot if you cook them well-done. Might as well just take everyone out to McDonald's at that point.

Why doesn't Weber make diamond shaped grates? I don't want to buy the Chinesium ones that are full of poison

>> No.19385511

Lots of reasons but the most common ones I witness are too high a heat, no basting or using meat with insufficient fat content to keep it juicy. And just general lack of grill skills but that ties in with the rest, since if you can't grill you probably can't cook to begin with.

I take grilling pretty seriously, grind my own meat, make my own patties, and have a whole system down for grilling. I also use a thermopen every time to ensure they’re perfect.

You don’t have to do all of this to have a great burger, but understanding the basics goes a very long way.

BBQ and Outdoor cooking are huge hobbies of mine.

And? I think it looks better with the diamonds not quite square.
I've never used the square grill Anon posted, but it seems like the advantage is you can spend less time on each side charring, especially if you sous vide.
Personally, I just get by with one set of stripes on each side. Works for me.

Maybe it's because I'm white trash, but every cookout I've ever been to was mostly an excuse to drink alcohol and the food was an afterthought. >not even necessarily a manly or egotistical thing,
No necessarily, but I've encountered plenty of boomers who get offended by the idea of anyone touching "their grill", and then when the food is finally ready it's cold, overcooked burgers, burnt hot dogs that we refer to as "charred" so as not to offend, and maybe some chicken with the consistency of shoe leather. I somehow always end up eating a couple fucking hot dogs and have to remind myself that it's not really about the food, despite the fact that there's no reason the food had to be practically inedible.
