I've seen Russians do that and I've shitposted about it at least once or twice on this very subreddit. You know, it's not a Russian thing. In fact, I think almost every culture on earth has some type of plain pasta peasantry dish. I'm the most American man this side of the Ohio and I've eaten plain spaghetti with parmesan and hot sauce plenty of times.

I mean, let's break it down... East Asia they have tons of plain ramen and rice noodle stuff. North Asia you have Russians and Tatars and other tater tots eating plain spaghetti. In the South you have Indians eating God know's what. To the west you have Turks selling nude pics on the internet. Enen in Italy they sprinkle pasta with black pepper and call it a meal, apparently. At least this is what I've read online.

In italy some people like it without sauce too, it's called "pasta in bianco". Just a little butter is added. But in russia pasta is viewed more as a side-dish
