19361576 No.19361576 [Reply] [Original]

I finally got out of the industry and have been working at possibly the least stressful job on the planet that still requires you to go outside. It’s in a busy business area with a bunch of chain restaurants and mediocre ethnic places that cater to the lunch crowd. It’s the first time I’ve had to worry about lunch in years, but everyone is insane and orders in food almost every day. Suffice to say, after a month working in the area I’ve gotten take-out from a few places after work just to try them out. Which if any would you try? I’ll give my opinions at the end.

First is Panda Express:
Orange Chicken
Eggplant Tofu
Chow Mein
3 Piece Potstickers
Comes with fortune cookie
$12

Panda Express was by far the worst. Imagine the most generic American-Chinese food and then remove all the flavor. They didn’t even have chopsticks, and it was in the same parking lot as a Walmart, lol.

L&L wasn’t bad. They definitely left out a couple ingredients from the Lau Lau, and the rice was weirdly dry for how busy they were. $17 for a plate lunch is also insane.

The Korean looked great. I was skeptical walking in if they were even going to include rice and side dishes, and then they gave me a bag of noodles and threw in a few rice cakes because…why not? But it turned out to be some of the most bland Korean food I’ve ever had, which probably made it the most disappointing. That one piece of dry, lean pork was all the pork that was included, the broth had no depth of flavor, and I’m pretty sure they just threw in a few pieces of their really mild kimchi and then added an entire quarter of a blanched cabbage, uncut.

Now I really want to go to my old Korean place in the shitty part of town. If I do so this weekend I’ll make a thread.

Yeah, and Hawaiian food doesn't usually have much presentation to it unless you know what you're looking at. The "Korean" food on the other hand looked pretty good but was practically flavorless. I'm sure they made the soup to order (if they made it earlier in the day it would at least have had time for a little bit of flavor to develop - not that the dish normally takes a long time), but you're right, as soon as I pulled out the little box of banchan my first thought was that they had been put together by some prep-cook first thing in the morning and they have an entire lowboy with nothing but to-go banchans the server throws in the bag when they get a take-out order.

Unless you only eat in one of these business belt cheesecake factory areas or live in like Ohio, or literal North Dakota, most "ethnic food places" in the US actually kind of just cater to people from that country. Panda Express is probably the worst example of American-Chinese food. That was kind of the point. Calling it "American Salaryman food" was meant to make the contrast between Japanese Salarymen, who at least stereotypically have lots of really good small restaurants and food stands to choose from during their soul crushing 18 hour days, whereas in the US people who have cushy jobs are for some reason spending their money eating the shittiest chain food possible, which most people otherwise typically avoid. I wasn't trying to make some kind of overarching value judgment; it's just really bizarre how people eat in different countries depending on the context. I'm pretty sure the only reason most chain restaurants like Panda Express, Chipotle, Panera, or Applebee's are even in business at all at this point is because of office workers regularly ordering in food from those places.

It's $20/hr starting, which is basically a 30% pay cut from what I was making in the kitchen (I was sous chef at my last two jobs), but holy shit, it doesn't even feel like work in comparison. Not going to give any more details because some autist has spent years trying to dox me for some reason.

Chinese food is a staple across the US. Panda Express is actually low quality Chinese takeout here, but it is still pretty good as far as fast food is concerned.

A small American city of 50,000 should have at least half a dozen Chinese food options.

The katsu was heavenly when I tried it. It was the first meal I had in Hawaii when I went there, and then I drove from Kona to Hilo through the hills and watched the ocean as the sun set and it rained on my car. Was such a magnificent first evening.

Hyper-depends on where you live. In you're in the Southwest outside of California, you get Panda and maybe a couple sit-down diners and/or buffet places, but the fast-food style restaurants almost completely disappear.

Kek. Even the most "liberal" states aren't liberal enough to take common sense cues from shit the EU did decades ago. America is practically a far right shithole at this point. The closest thing we have to progressives are a handful of congresspeople who are like, "yeah, so like, maybe we shouldn't ban books for elementary school kids...?" The idea that we'd do any basic regulation for unhealthy food or GMOs is laughable. The ironic thing is that most people want that shit; it's just that we haven't been a functioning democracy in a long time.
