It's about the pacing. Shots are for girls trying to get drunk fast and "let loose"; mug vodka is for maintaining a baseline but being able to increase consumption on a whim without fanfare. The fact that the latter isn't measured, or kept track of, or can provide an answer to the question, "how many have you had?" also makes a significant difference.

That's the case with most alcoholics. People assume they're always partying and doing shots and causing drama, or alternatively laying in a gutter somewhere like a junky. In reality most people don't even know when someone in their life is continually intoxicated unless they actually start counting the bottles.

He drank a liter of vodka for years as a window installer and it wasn't until his wife broke down the credit card statements and realized how much he spent at the liquor store that anyone wised up. The key to taking a shot has nothing to do with the kind of liquid that follows
The reason a chaser really helps is because it prevents a puff of air from inhalation from drying out and burning your throat when it hits the alcohol lining it.
You can get the same effect by keeping your mouth closed after taking the shot and breathing through your nose

That's why car flasks are a thing. It's actually a lot safer for some people to have a few drinks in their car after work before getting on the freeway instead of trying to do it while coughing and shaking and getting dizzy and possibly killing someone.

Being asian or black or jewish or poor whatever dumb shit you were implying doesn't fuck with your reaction time and spatial awareness - being drunk does. And no, no amount of tolerance means your reaction times aren't being reduced.
Alcohol withdrawal doesn't impair your reaction time, it makes you shaky. If you're beyond mild symptoms that means you're at risk of a fucking seizure.

Who are you quoting? Nobody was talking about "drunk people". We were talking about functional alcoholics; people who drink throughout the day rather than do a bunch of shots and "get wasted". Of course drunk people shouldn't be on the road. I was going to say you might be suffering from withdrawals based on your poor reading comprehension, but you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

Nigga I don't care about your tolerance or how often you drink, .08 BAC impairs reaction times by 120ms and that increases with higher BAC. I don't give a shit about your nonsense distinction between daydrinking and binging.
>that's not how it works!
I didn't say "a little," but yes it is. If you are beyond the mild symptoms of withdrawal (shakiness, anxiety, headache, palpitations) then you are in the range of dependence where your withdrawal symptoms will include hallucination and/or seizure.

It is a constant distraction whether your reaction time is affected or not. My wife is a nurse practitioner and worked in an ER for years. It was a standing doctor's order that anyone detoxing have in their chart that they shouldn't operate a vehicle for specific amounts of time based on the substance and perceived level of addiction. Then 30-60 mins in a sauna, where someone pours another round of cold vodka.

If you're not drinking it with friends to chase away the sniffles, you're probably better off mixing it in something. There's not much flavour experience to be had - the ideal that vodkas strive for is 40-55% pure ethanol to 45-60% pure water - there is only getting shitty.

I bet you guys regularly come to the cooking board to argue.

Yes, there is somewhat of a practice-makes-perfect aspect to functional chronic alcoholism. Not that the testing was perfect by any means (A high speed camera, filming a small table where a bunch of drunk chefs, cooks and musicians would take a breathalyzer, then sit opposite each other waiting for a light to turn on so they can slap each other), but the evidence that I've gathered does show that seasoned saucers had a 10-30ms advantage over people with similar BAC. Size and weight gave an advantage to keeping the BAC down, but not to reaction time against comparatively impaired individuals.

Capping off the experiment, higher BAC seemed to delay the onset of hot sauce by up to 30s, but also delayed the crest by a minute or more across the board.

Yeah, I was drinking alot in my late 20's early 30's and was functioning fine ( on the outside). Outstanding work performance, no money issues, general sloppy nonfunctioning drunk behavior. But I was getting shit tanked every day all day and caused me marital problems. I quit after my labs at the doctor were out of wack and I didnt want to die a slow painful death of liver failure. Plus after quitting I realized how dependant my body had become on it and it was scary. Tremors, nausea, horrible insomnia, loss of appetite, sweats headaches etc. Im lucky I didnt have seizures or anything worse. I dont believe people that say alcoholism is genetic. Anyone can be addicted to anything, people pick up habits that become addictions because they usually have some other unresovled issue they are living with.
After sitting back and really looking at WHY I was drinking so much and adressing that I am much happier. People that think anyone who had alcohol dependance in the past can never drink again without becoming "Frank the Tank" are idiots. This may be true for people that still havent dealt with whatever their real issue was/is. I can happily sip a beer or two these days and just enjoy.

A predisposition toward addiction can absolutely be genetic - what those addictions might be are almost 100% environment and access, and the tendency might never appear, or it might manifest in weird ways like over-the-top showmanship.... And some people recover, but a lot don't (they're perpetually "Recovering). They might not go zero to fucked in two beers, but they might. Maybe it takes a month to build up to a bender and slip - emotionally - right back to the bottom of the hill. Some people (the two of us, for instance) can analyze things, understand that our uses and abuses were fairly harmful to our physical and social well-being, and get a good feel for where that line is between good-time Gus and Franklin the burning tank.

A shot isn't really going to do much, but I'd recommend a mixed drink instead of just doing shots. A vodka coke rather than just a vodka, I mean. Hell, mix in a gatorade sachet in there too, if you're trying to avoid being a fatty and aren't getting a greasy 2am kebab to help fight off any hangover. I do that now because Kebabs or drunken smoked chicken, fried rice and satay sauce just makes me throw up way more in the morning and doesn't help with hangover at all anymore.

I think it probably counts as child abuse to have their strangely underdressed 14 year old daughter taking orders at 2am at the chinese food place, but by god do I respect the hustle of being one of two places open all night to make bank on upselling drunk bitches on getting a pizza box of deep fried shit and selling them it for £30. And always giving incorrect change on purpose, but excluding certain people they like from that policy. I just started going there because they're the only place I've seen that isn't an all you can eat buffet that serves smoked chicken, but it did feel good when her mum came over and said no to the daughter and gave me proper change. That inspired loyalty even though I know it shouldn't.

I don't know what's worse, that I expect this kind of on-the-spectrum response here, or that I believe that someone on /ck/ would experiment with alcoholism.

Friendly reminder that if you drink more than basically a bottle and a half of wine a week, you're probably damaging your liver. Alcoholic fatty liver disease usually has NO SYMPTOMS. Undiagnosed and untreated alcoholic fatty liver disease will develop into cirrhosis which can also have NO SYMPTOMS. You will not feel brave, you will not feel special or interesting when you are finally diagnosed. You will just feel a mortifying regret and sadness.

You do not have 'drinker genes'.
Being tall does not help.
Having tolerance to alcohol and being able to drink people under the table are warning signs - not signs that you can survive drinking a dangerous amount (not for long).

Stop binge drinking. Stop drinking beyond safe limits. If you can't do it, talk to your doctor. There are medicines which block the desire to drink. If that doesn't work and this will be rejected by some but honestly - roll a joint. Anything but alcohol.
