It's not actually illegal for you to drink or buy booze after 18, some states even sooner. It's just illegal to sell people under 21 alcohol.
My first legal one was in Austria, I was 17, insrted my standardized 4th reich id card into a vending machine and a few globohomo tokens. It gave me a goyslop beer back which amused me more than the actual drinking.

I'll introduce my kids at early age too, so they don't end up acting like typical burgers who waited until 21 and then went apeshit on booze when they could. That being said, go with a specific style, try lager first and if it's good move up to ale, then IPA. Finish off with a stout. That pretty much gives you the whole swath of flavors that are worth it. Sours, lambics and the like appeal to people who aren't fans of the beer taste because they are fruity. Anything with a crazy German name like Hefeweizen or Weihenstephaner is usually great too, but don't get alarmed if you aren't a fan of the European styles since it's more a pro drinker thing.
