next to other stuff it's going to harder for it to impress as it's only 40%, but it's by no means bad. if you have one of the bottles since they went to using corks for the Yellow Label it may have been affecting the drink if it were tainted.

The actual ingredients in it. For example, gin has a much stronger taste than vodka because it is made up of more stuff, thus more flavours. Doesn't matter if it's more or less alcohol. But then also, you can take the same ABV and have differences. Let's say you buy a top shelf vodka and then the absolute cheapest vodka you can find. Let's assume both are 40%. Chances are the cheaper one is going to taste like shit.

Obviously higher ABV does impact taste because if you take a sip of grain alcohol that's 90%, it'll burn the fuck out of your throat. But you can still get other high ABV drinks that go down quite smooth.

If someone's struggling to figure out the difference between a smooth vodka and a smooth whiskey, then I can't help them. Also, I think the best way to describe whiskeys is honestly by putting them on an x and y axis with different bottles plotted along the graph to compare and contrast profiles, instead of saying oh this is bananas (which typically means young and hot) and this is chocolate covered cherries. I tend not to listen to what "expert" tasting notes are and try things for myself and see what I make of them without influence, or try things with friends and see what we all make of it. There are certainly bottles I prefer over others in each quadrant, but I'd even put barrel proof offerings on a separate graph entirely.

No, "smooth" is basically a buzzword, the most meaningful possible use of it is when it refers to something where any alcohol hit or even just bitter or astringent flavors is hidden by sugar, intentionally added or not. If you use "smooth" to mean "good" then the best spirits would logically be sugary swill, and I don't think it's controversial to say that only a plebeian would think that. Good liquor can obviously be somewhat smooth from picking up residual sugars from the wood or sherry, but that wouldn't be nearly as smooth as shit like "premium" rum with added sugar.

Whiskey can still give you hangovers but that can be prevented by slightly diluting it with water, even the water from melted ice in whiskey on the rocks is enough to stave one off. There isn't a good work around for wine, however.
I don't know why but for me, having water in the whiskey itself does a better job at preventing hangovers than drinking it neat and drinking water along side it.
