Thread for discussing coffee and coffee-related topics.

If you're old and confused, accidentally roast any garbanzo beans lately?

Here's how I do egg coffee
>1 egg, beaten
>Smash the shell and toss that in too
>Add grounds and mix to wet soil consistency, adding more grounds as needed
>Bring water to a boil
>Spoon in the grounds
>Wait until fine foam disappears
>Turn off heat and leave pot on burner for 10 minutes
>Move off burner, add some cold water and wait for grounds to settle
>Pour through strainer to serve
Any bros have some suggestions for improving egg coffee?

Poor temperature regulation. No flow control. The Decent is currently the only viable option for a home machine unless you're looking to pay 20k+ for one of the big 3group commercial machines that actually took cues from the Decent and integrated its features.

Its just a tough sell these days. I wanted one(or a cremina) for years, now you'd almost have to give it to me. Flair58 will heat your water from cold, it just takes a bit. Bypass is a thing, dripper anatomy matters(ridges can increase bypass, different positions of ridges matter), he's noticed more homogeneous brews with flats and more stratified flavors with cones. More chocolately balanced brews out of flats, more acidity+popping fruit brews out of cones. Yes but fine meshes clog, let more oil through, and will be more inconsistent than a fresh paper every time. Nothing stopping you from buying a metal v60 filter and cutting it down though. $22 on the zon. Gagne uses a piece of screen in the bottom of stagg drippers to keep the papers from choking.

I had the flu and spent the week end with the fever and pain everywhere.

Worry not bros, I’m here now and, coincidentally, I just had goffee.

How did moka pots re-center the coffee addict noosphere lately? It used to be all french press, then it was all pour over and espresso.
is this a natural rejection of the status quo by contrarians? keep in mind we are all contrarian and especially you
or is it Bialetti Corporation sponsoring some ads? I'm not being paid for this but maybe I was influenced by someone who was.
or is it a natural evolution of coffee in covid or inflation? A $4 brick of cafe bustelo tastes pretty good out of a moka pot and lasts a few days of solid caffeine. though i prefer the $5 smaller can of Lavazza nowadays.

I've been looking for a webm like this for weeks and the pocketsciencecoffee guy just uploaded it a few days ago.

I should have mentioned this yesterday, but thats basically what people are using the new super expensive baskets for. People are pulling 27%ey "espresso" at filter ratios and using the pump pressure to get around the clogging issue. Sworks is pulling 1:16 shots, wafo says start at 1:3 and go as far as 1:20.

Thank anon. Perhaps I'll try a much coarser grind on the Brazilian beans and see how it goes as I had poor results from a finer grind with my relatively normal outputs of 29s 1:2 coffee grounds to espresso. Using a 1Zpresso J-Max that I had inquired about here a month ago so I have fairly fine grained steps and I think I will need to jump a good number of steps to achieve a turbo shot. I have a dogshit espresso machine though so I'm at the mercy of that for now.

Goodnight my friends. May you be blessed with excellent brews.

Coarsen up, control that pour better. You've taken my advice to wash down your walls to heart. Now prevent that sticking from happening to begin with. >> No.19305215

The first time I washed the walls it was fines bonanza and the drawthrough was way too long so it tasted overextracted. The last couple of cups have been hella enjoyable, but there is some amount of variance, I cant nail it every time. Ill grind coarser and pour even slower next time. Sadly only one more brew tomorrow morning and then I go travelling for 3 weeks

>> No.19305274

>>19305215
Was that you asking about melitta vs v60 earlier? If so those melitta filters are dogshit. You've got a fines bonanza from your grinder + your drawdown is long because the "loading point" of the filters is low. Accumulated fines trapped in the filter eventually choke your flow. You can get better trapezoidal filters from cafec, but I'd just take the v60/origami/cafec flower/kono pill soon, with the better filters.

Whole world of different drippers and materials out there. Do a little research when you get back and find something you like. You'll probably be using it for a few years so it'd suck to get stuck with something shitty again. I like my porcelain origami. Kind of want a cafec flower or hakka-life sakura if it were to break, maybe a kadou. This site stocks some interesting drippers you don't see often. Pretty good descriptions of the comparative flow rates but who knows, he could be full of shit. If you wanted to stick with the same shape, cafec and kalita both have new melitta style "variants" in porcelain with different flow rates.

I'm skimming through that guys blog posts again. He says the hakkalife sakura might be what you're looking for with a one pour recipe. Smaller exit than most cones with shallow ridges. Slightly lower/slower flow, but you were worried about bypass and that will curb it a bit compared to higher flow v60s.
>Personal tips: If you like non-stop pour method, then I think you might like this dripper. Since the flow rate of Sakura is not as fast as Hario V60 or Kadou M1, you don’t need to focus too much on the water control or worrying flow rate too fast might lead to under extraction. Having said that, I am a big fan of pour and pause method and I still enjoy using Sakura. Just need to reduce the number of pour and not to stir the coffee bed too hard at the late stage.

I went 10 steps coarser, got roughly 1:2.5 in 26s and it was much better although I had some channeling. I will go a little coarser maybe 5 steps next time to see if there is any additional improvement. I've been experimenting with grind, time, and a little bit with dose. I'm not sure I would like using paper filters but I do have some Chemex filters I could cut up to test. Currently using filtered tap water but once I've gained more understanding of my other variables I will try different water. Thanks for the printout I'll start using it tomorrow.

Good to hear! Those bottom filters will probably solve alot of that channelling. I cut mine out of the big square chemex filters but if you don't want to fuck with that right now just buy some ones from sworks. Goodbrothers sells espresso papers in sizes other than 58mm, but they're way more expensive since they're handcutting them.

Not a huge fan of second hand things tbqh. I guess I'll survive until the next batch, or something else would come off. i got my loveramics coffee bean dosing trays today
and i absolutely love them
the small is best for espresso(20g seems to be the max amount of beans it can comfortably hold)
and large is better for moka or other brewing methods that often have doses larger than 20g.
both can hold more than that but if you plan on doing a spray rdt any more than what i said feels like it will be annoying.
the feel and weight is fantastic.
also the sound of beans falling into each tray is very pleasing
the small tray makes a lower sound than the large tray.
but both are joyful sounds :)
dosing into my rok grinder is soooo much better than the small cup i was using that came with the grinder.
very very happy, highly recommend :)

I've got the shitty ektools 2.25in punch. Its a crapshoot with quality. I had to return and reorder because the first one would jam and not cut. Second one works better but still not perfectly, little fiddly. I've seen people recommend this one recently since you can adjust the diameter and replace blades. I think fiskars has a very similar one.

Redpill: Instant coffee is actually fine. Incredibly cheap, easy to make, delivers caffeine and the other substance feeling given by drinking coffee.

So it has that distinct taste to it - what about all the distinct bitter artisan coffee or tea tastes that you're meant to just suck up until you get used to them? You've just conditioned yourself to habituate to them yet when you taste the instant you call it uncultured muck for plebs.

And sure the price is the main thing for me. Tired of dishing out $20 what seems like every few days compared to instant which is almost nothing.
