I use to live in Brisbane, Australia and they have a German club next to the big cricket stadium. It was less a bar and more a club for old Germans to come and catch up but they had an unreal selection of beers and Schnapps. They also had a full German restaurant and a polka guy on Friday and Saturday who would do karaoke on request. I can't overstate enough how amazing this place was.

Anyway, the point of the story is they had a random beer on tap when I went in and I tried it, fell in love, and never looked back. I've since left Australia but when I went back to visit I found they'd discontinued it and the brewery had been bought out. I was absolutely gutted.

Still, it fuelled my love for German beer and led to me specifically visiting Köln and loving the beers there.

I bit surprising luvs. Wheat ales and hefeweizen are a big thing even in the US. The most prominent being Blue Moon. Sam Adams also has a seasonal summer wheat ale that is in rotation right now. They're fantastic and feel more traditional to me. Of course the best wheat beers are imported or from micros.

In a way, I'd love to have been old enough to know the difference between pre-1970's Schlitz and the Schlitz of today. Supposedly Pabst reconstructed the formula that it had been brewed under which made it popular before it was New Coke'd, but I'll never know what it was like.

Aventinus is great, Weihenstephaner is quality as well. Paulaner/Franziskaner/Erdinger are mid but decently cheap and widespread, would recommend at least trying.
Generally anything German is at least decent. Try to get at least one Hefeweisen and one Dunkelweisen to find out where your tastes lie.

Wheat beer is great. They usually have a sweeter kind of banana taste to them. Especially if they're cloudy.
Try getting a hold of some German wheat beers. I recommend Störtebeker the most. Erdinger is a good second and probably most common. Weihenstephaner is ok too.

This is one I've started liking because of how easy to drink it is.
