Second hand, but ere' goes: A late 20's woman was treated for minor injuries after a car crash with a drunk, but her 3 year old daughter died. From my wife's account she was heartbroken, hysterical, and worked her self up to the point of losing consciousness. I was 28ish when she told me this story and understood it, but have since had a kid and would agree that this behavior, if not exhibited, would be a red flag in and of itself.

It turns out that she'd been heating up a bottle over the stove to the point that the formula was boiling and dousing her wrists in it. Her husband came home from work and brought her in...I was told that her wrist looked like over cooked honey ham. I can't really visualize that, but enough that the skin had come off to the point where you could see the divot by looking down her arm (I was told that after the dead skin was removed by a surgeon and my wife was able to treat the burn). A little odd, but still just mildly crazy imo....The woman acted embarrassed and agreed to grief counseling.

She was admitted and kept for observation for 48 hours (self risk) in that time she managed to somehow take several pictures of children from the nurse's station and ingest them as well. Her husband, for some reason, did not have her committed at that point.

Perhaps not as shocking as a druggie eating another one, but by the account of everyone my wife was allowed to talk to this was a 100% normal, happy woman up until the moment her child died. The thing is, my wife is one of the most level headed, rational people I know and if something were to happen to my daughter I wouldn't be overly shocked if she went this crazy...

There are also numerous cases of women being admitted just to attempt to steal newborns. I've heard of one actually being able to take the baby out of the hospital before being caught....those are more tame but if you were the parent of an hours old child...that would rock your world.

Not off the top of my head, but I'll ask her when she's home from work. There have been several stories where a man will kill his infant aged son/daughter. Those are almost as fictional to me as I literally cannot imagine it. Like if it try my brain changes channels.
