both these things exist and they exist for a reason. look up Steve's videos on emergency rations - those tend to be just bars, compressed food, candy, stuff like that.

>> No.19227262

>>19227111
yeah, but I'm not talking Datrex survival bars, even though those things actually taste alright nowadays. these are actual foods that people on the go actually pay good money to eat. the advantage is that they're really easy to "prepare" and eat, just take it out of a pocket, unwrap, and bite. no fucking around with spoons and tubes. there are minimal crumbs and one can easily stuff an unfinished bar back into a pocket for later. it would in fact solve a perennial problem in the army, which is that soldiers tend to "ratfuck" MREs for snacks and easy to eat entrees, often leaving the fiddly shit like sloppy entrees and canned items.

Because I'm not insane; I'm not calling for everyone to subsist on Datrex bars. All I'm saying is to consider the same food items, roughly speaking, but in a more portable form.

This ration is already halfway there. The hangup comes with the second pic - you get four packets of nibbles for no good reason. That could all have been pressed together into a fruit bar, a date-nut bar, and the beef bits into a meat bar - which IMHO feels a lot more natural than this dog-kibble-like setup.

Then the third meal, PB and applepie spread on crackers. Spreading shit on flatbread is a natural and comfy human thing to do under normal circumstances, so I understand its place in a normal ration, but ever try doing that while hungry in the pouring rain sitting in a hole (under a tarp if you're lucky)? It's fiddly. You need both hands AND somewhere to put things down on. And again, it's for no good reason that I can see; make it a wheat-oat carb bar, and a fruit-and-nut bar, and take a bite of each. For a snack item it's ridiculously laborious.

Of course you want at least one eat-from-the-bag meal for variety's sake so I don't begrudge that one bag of meat-and-rice stew. It's the unnecessary bags of nuts and the spreads that I don't see the point of.

Short of putting grated plutonium in them, how calorie-dense can you get a bar for a meal?

Surely the military can find a way to make a bar that is both palatable but contains 4000 calories and 5000mg caffeine for sustained bugman killing.

Follow the above comment thread; my objection is not about calorie density, it's about ease of use

anyway... a Mars Bar or Snickers is pretty dense at ~230 calories per 50g
meat bars or jerky clocks in at ~200 calories per 50g
and a Datrex survival bar (which is mainly enriched flour) has ~250 calories per 50g
the best fruit-granola bar has ~193 calories per 50g

so a 4000 calorie ration is still going to end up roughly 800g or a tad less than 2lbs
but the technology is definitely there to make bars of whatever nutrient profile you want, within these parameters

You've gotten confused and combined several ideas into one.
What you're thinking of is the time Aimo Koivunen accidentally consumed a significant amount of Pervitin(not panzerschokolade!) while trying to escape Russian troops(not Germans, they were allied with Finland and even supplied the Pervitin Aimo took) causing him to lose consciousness and be left behind. He spent the next two weeks in a stupor evading Russians and eating barely anything until he stepped on a mine and was rescued after days of waiting.

unfortunately you are wrong there. Canned food is typically of higher quality than the stuff you find in a real mre. That said. It really really REALY depends on your usecase and storage conditions. do you want to grab these and GO somewhere? if so you are probably going to have a rough time packing any kind of cracker outside of matzah. Do you want to heat them? or are you fine eating cold food? do you have specific energy drink boosters you need to include? Dietary restrictions?

If you want to go to complete brass tacks, you literally cannot do better than home made or local bought pemmican pre jarred or vacuum packed. unsweetened Chocolate and tinned fish are good sides. The issue there though is teperature. if you let them get hot and they aren't in a tin or jar you are fucked. (*melting temperature of tallow)

Basically creating rations is a skill like anything else. once you decide what your needs are its all about selecting the components and menus at prices you can afford.

>The Cheesecake Bar, wow
>It tastes normal
Never change Steve.

The transition from freeze drying to vacuum microwave drying and sonic compression is fascinating. It's honestly impressive how the preservation and efficiency of meals continues to evolve and they were able to extract at additional 10% weight loss and something like a 50% reduction in volume over the FSR Steve showed, all while maintaining calorie content and vitamin/mineral content along with some added moisture (that last bit along with oxygen are usually the Swords of Damocles wrt MREs). I found an reprinted Popular Mechanics article from 2019 that goes over the process (about 3 years ago so right when the CCAR Steve ate would have been produced):
https://news.yahoo.com/cooking-shrinking-modern-combat-ration-130000273.html
>Freeze-drying technology, which has been used in large-scale production since 1940, was once the common process for reducing the weight of meals. But now, as senior food technologist Dr. Tom Yang shows me, vacuum-microwave drying has supplemented it, further reducing the weight of rations.

>Take a banana: It’s placed into a rotating drum or on a tray, which is then placed inside a large washing machine–like rig outfitted with a powerful pump that creates a vacuum, which lowers the boiling point of water inside of the machine to a mere 68 degrees Fahrenheit. (Water normally boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.) The banana can now be microwaved at the temperature of a pleasant spring day.

>After an hour of gentle tumbling, about half of the water has been vaporized. The banana now weighs about half as much as it did when it started, but it still tastes like a banana. By virtue of the way that the banana is dried, it’s more pliable than a freeze-dried banana. So you can compress it into a dense, chewy, and tiny banana (or cheeseburger or slice of New York–style cheesecake). It can be eaten as is or rehydrated with water.

>But it can still get smaller. Senior food engineer Ann Barrett, PhD., showed me a technique called sonic agglomeration. After a food has been dried in the VMD, it’s placed in an “ultrasonic welder,” where it is pressed into a small mold that has a diameter a little bit larger than a golf ball. Through a combination of pressure and sonic vibration, the food particles’ edges begin to weld, causing all of the various particles of whatever ingredients were put in the mold to fuse together.

>You’re left with a tiny, dense disc of food that fits easily in the palm of your hand, but also contains hundreds of calories. A soldier can now eat it on the go or rehydrate it to make something like a paste or soup.

>The whole process takes about an hour. Freeze-drying may have taken two days.
Imagine being microwaved but you still as cool as early morning in March, and then are massaged with such intensity the particles of your body rearrange into the space of a deck of playing cards.

so the whole point with freeze drying is that you can skip the liquid-to-steam transition. liquid water has a capillary action as it wicks through the food, fucking up the structure. if you go to a solid, and then straight to steam, you can drive the water off without significantly affecting the overall structure.
you can boil water at room temperature if you pull even a not-that-extreme vacuum. which is why you freeze first, then pull the vacuum. i don't really understand why vacuum microwave drying would be significantly different than just pulling a strong vacuum on otherwise room temperature food, but i will look into it.

>fucking up the structure
I see, so freeze drying is still the better choice for some foods.
>I don't really understand why vacuum microwave drying would be significantly different than just pulling a strong vacuum on otherwise room temperature food
When water evaporates, it cools the food, so you end up pulling more and more vacuum and the low temperatures would change the nutritional properties of the food.
By heating it you balance the energy and keep the food at room temp.

Basically he got scammed, sad story. Steve was approached online by another MREInfo user about starting this MRE/ration museum. The guy had a fake posting history, construction plans, photos of the building, a Kickstarter, everything seemed legit. Steve start shipping over some of his most valuable MREs.

But it was all a con by Niko Avocado, who had found Steve's channel and devised a plan to get all that calorie-dense food for free. He immediately consumed all of the rations Steve sent, apparently over $50,000 worth. The money is one thing but think about all the history lost too. Those 1lb tins of Vietnam-era cheesy potatoes are nearly impossible to find on eBay, but now it's just another Ukrainian fat roll.

Genuine question since I don't smoke. Can't you guys just grow your own tobacco and make your own cigarettes?

>> No.19242267

>>19242205
Not a smoker but I imagine it's just too much effort to grow tobacco, store it to dry, then grind up. There also might be regulations against it seeing as the US has a dedicated agency for it.

>> No.19242273

>>19242205
Of course you can, but it's easier just to buy cigs. Plenty of small farms around here grow tobacco.
