19212656 No.19212656 [Reply] [Original]

Someone gave me three cans of this. What can I do with it? I ate half of one can by itself and it was very bland. I put the second half on a few sandwiches. It spread easily, but didn't improve the quality of the meal. I'm not going to make a pie, I want something relatively healthy. I was thinking about adding milk and heating it to mix with oatmeal. I don't have any other ideas.

oh and it calls for spices; feel free to give yourself a generous helping of that. The recipe also calls for evaporated milk but I always use regular milk and if you're gonna do that add a bit less milk to the mix because otherwise it will be too liquidy and take a bit longer to cook.

I don't like the stuff, but i once had some pumpkin bao that were nice. None of that pumpkin spice bullshit, tho. Just pumpkin custard stuffed into bao. Try that?

This. I follow that recipe religiously and use it for organic canned pumpkin or for times that I can find fresh pie pumpkins. For me a lot of pumpkin pie recipes call for too much clove, but this one hits it just right.

Another great recipe is for a pumpkin pie roll. It requires a jelly roll pan but it's very easy to make, only people will think you put a lot more effort into it than you really did. https://www.verybestbaking.com/libbys/recipes/libby-s-pumpkin-roll/

This is the post. Pumpkin pie is surface level shit. Pumpkin bread with the canned puree is great and always super moist, and Pumpkin soup with some sage, nuts, and olive oil drizzled on top is delicious.

Only if you put sugar in it.
If you'll eat it out of the can, or spread on bread, why not a sugar-free pie?
DESU, I don't normally make, or eat pie, so I Googled it. The very first recipe I found doesn't use sugar.

Maybe they weren't made with the canned stuff. When i make pumpkin soup, i use Spanish pumpkin (the dusty orange, kinda squashed-lookin' ones) because they're less sweet than sugarbaby pumpkins and other round varieties.
Even butternut is a little too sweet for me.

Nope! I specifically bought the ones (i stupidly got several of them) i did because i was aware of that. The ingredients listed "pumpkin" as the sole content of the can. I think it was just a sweet variety, is all, and i don't know any canned pumpkin which lists which variety/ies they use to make sure I don't get another sugarbomb so i just don't but then anymore.
btw, i used the cans i had to make pumpkin pies, even though I hate it and have them to friends and neighbours and served one at a Friendsgiving

Yeah, the addition of honey kinda confirms my idea: they play up the sweetness. Thanks for sharing the recipe, but it's definitely not one for me. Is there an opposite of a sweettooth? Cuz that's basically me. Candies and caramels are fine because it's a small bit. A single one will do me. But things like sweet potato pie, pumpkin pie and so on are too large a quantity of too sugary a food for me.

Oh, the pumpkin leather suggestion in >>19213128 might be perfect for you, then. No added sugar in most fruit leathers, just cooked fruit that's spread on silpat and dehydrated or baked at low temperature. Most add grated or pureed apple, presumably for pectin (afaik, crabapples, for example, are very high in pectins) but not many recipes tell you to add much sugar, if any at all.

You can substitute it in any recipe that calls for tomato paste. Sounds weird but it totally works, doesn't even taste that pumpkin-y when it's not the main part of a dish like pumpkin soup or pumpkin pie. I've used it in bolognese, chili, beef stew, all came out great. Also can substitute for tomato sauce by watering it down a little.
