19188110 No.19188110 [Reply] [Original]

Once a month or so I like to get a pepperoni pizza. Since it's so infrequent, I like to try more expensive pizzas from local and mom & pop places. My favorite style is "Pacific Northwest Style". Today I got a pizza from Pietros, a PNW joint with 4 locations in Oregon. As you can see on the box, they've been around since 1957!

PNW style crust is very crispy on bottom and soft on top. This is a pretty good PNW pie. The crust is excellent, but the sauce and cheese are maybe a 5/10. It was also really expensive. I would give it overall a 6.8/10 rating.

Other than a single slice last year because a local place reopened after COVID, I haven't gotten any pizza from any place in about seven years or so. The pizza here is quite nice regardless of where you go and i don't even know if any chain places exist here at all. Certainly not in my zip code nor in any surrounding it.

An interesting factoid, Papa Murphy's was created when Papa Aldo's, a take and bake pizza place from Hillsboro, Oregon, merged with Murphy's pizza from somewhere in California. My dad would get Papa Aldo's sometimes when I was a kid.

A lot of people seem to think that I made up the label "PNW style" but it's how lots of these places identify. Several of them even describe their pizza that way on their websites.

It is a very specific type of crust. The its not very heavily yeasted, and the gluten is not heavily worked. The bottom of the crust is cracker-like, and there is often a separation that occurs between the bottom and top part of the crust. The top part is very soft, a bit dense with a very fine crumb. It is always sauced completely covering the crust with no bare spots, and is typically cooked on an old fashioned wood-fired oven.

Sometimes called Northwest Style, and sometimes Oregon or Washington style, but most often Pacific Northwest style, it's all the same style. It is instantly recognizable if you've had it. It's also been made here in the PNW since at least the 50's.

There are dozens of these places around Oregon and Washington. In my town alone there are 6 that I know of... Padington's, Walery's, Michaelangelo's, Pietro's, Abby's Legendary, and JC's.

Padington's is my favorite. Here's their website in which they refer to themselves as "northwest style": https://padingtonspizza.com/

That's about as much effort as I'm going to put into continually trying to convince people who don't even bother to google and just think they "know".

>Oregon pizza
Portland has some really great stuff with a lot of variety. There's NY, Neapolitan, deep dish, a few (but not nearly enough) ones like OP with the thin crust and sauce all the way to the edge, there's even a detroit style joint. Abby's in Gresham is good, but only some locations, they're better in southern Oregon for some reason. My favorites are the woodfired places, there's a foodcart called pyro pete's and a dine in place called pizzeria otto that are absurdly good.

Salem is a void of food and I fucking hate it here please god get me out. The local places like in OPs are absurdly expensive, IIRC padingtons charges like 22 bucks for a medium pep and they have you wait an hour and 15 minutes for it. There's an Abby's, but if you've ever had actual good Abby's it's a pale imitation to what it should be. Which leaves Garlic Jims, Odd Moes, Straight from New York, and chains. Those three are fine, better than accepting domino's in your life, but they're nothing to write home about. The likes of JCs and Waleries are too far from where I am to bother with.
We don't even have a good burger place except for one downtown, which is a pain to get to, and even they're just OK. Fucking Medford is better than here and it's not close.

Not pizza, but there's a lot of cool Mexican food on North Lancaster. I just moved out here and I'm a block away from a really good Mexican seafood restaurant, a Mexican grocery that makes fresh chicharron, and a pretty good carniceria.
